AFAIK the serial number will not ensure the correct driver is loaded - it only copes with multiple
devices of the same type plugged in at once. 

If FTDI are assigning PIDs numerically, perhaps they will run out in the not too-distant future -
then they may well be running short - They assigned me some starting D8xx recently...
