I agree that schematics are art, while layouts are much more so. I presonally prefer it when there are not too many symbolic connections (arrows, names on wires). They are good to use for global signals like power and GND, better than direct connection, but i hate them for signals. It makes a schematic extremely difficult to read because you can never find all the connections to one point. One searches hours for the corresponding symbol, and you easily miss one. Use them only when needed.
