Whenever I take on a new device of any kind to use, the first thing I do is get the data sheet and study it as much as necesary in order to really understand how the device works. I went over some of the first AVR data sheets I had probably 20 times or so before I wrote my first program. That program ran flawlessly as a result. (Not that I don't have bugs sometimes, but they're relatively easy to find and fix.) These data sheets give all the info you need to understand the interrupt system of the AVR's. Study them well.
