Best way to get reacquainted with AVR micro controllers

2014-11-08 by doug@whiteapple.u-net.com

Hope some kind souls can give some general advice.

I used the AT90S8535 some time ago to provide a few units for automating several bits of equipment used in a laboratory. The chips were mounted on a proprietary board (ABC Maxi board) and programmed in C and were very much just a way of getting certain things done.

Now I have more time and would like to pursue using micro controllers in greater depth I find that time has moved on and there are new AVR chips (Mega etc).

Can any one point me in the direction of a good source for something along the lines of the old development board but using the more recent chips and any good books/documentation for the newer chips.

I note the Arduino boards, but would prefer something without having an OS system using up memory.

I do have a STK500 and general facilities like power supplies, analogue scope etc.

Thanks for any help on this.

Doug.
