If you look at the home page you'll find the average is much higher than that.  It does tend to dip in the summer.

The avr-chat list at nongnu is pretty active.  I think a lot of people here are members over there as well.  I also would not recommend AVRfreaks.  There is a status system associated with how many posts you've made.  So, for every useful post in a thread there seem to be ten by people just seeking to up their post total.
