When I last used PIC they were only just getting into FLASH.  :-)

And back on topic, AVR FLASH CPUs were much less expensive than
Microchip, which brought me into the AVR camp about 5 years ago.

Microchip kicked Motorola's butt by making their product predictable in
cost and availability via DigiKey and Mouser. Atmel learned that lesson
from Microchip and one-upped them.

Those who were not buying microcontrollers 15 years ago may not know
that to buy a Motorola chip one had to beg for permission and allocation
from Motorola.
