Yeah I went through a plug-in period too,f**king great but I always think hardware sound's better,and everybody is using plug-ins,you can tell them a mile off,little Jonny on his laptop and sister using a smartphone,actually that could sound interesting synced.. lol

You have obviously looked on web and seen the S612 software,try using the S700 driver I bet you it will work.

Apperently on this unit there was a 3rd party v1.3 that allowed for six samples, currently this machine only does one shots. Softsynth SA( i believe a latter version) can be found, but it needs a special sound accelerator card to work in a Mac. But im hoping there is a 1986 version that works in the ATARI.
This thing has way more character than any plug-in I've used.
