Ha! I'm surprised we leave enough of the stuff for export!

Oh, and sorry to to rest of the list who don't appreciate a bit of friendly 'Off Topic' banter amongst its members. This list is fairly quiet compared to some of the other lists!

...typical american..."All germans eat Sauerkraut"...yeaaaah
riiight...Germany is a lot bigger than Bavaria...which is indeed in
the south of Germany, Hamburg in the North near the Northsea.
And by the way i rather eat Curry Chicken than ew-Sauerkraut...

Anyway...as we are already OT, i want to remind everyone to register
for the first "democratic" worldwide vote for ICANN (www.icann.org).

You should register until 31st July 2000, or you can´t vote in
October for the committee. By the way, already 30,000 Chinese and
20,000 Japanese are registered, but only 18,000 Americans and 18,000
Germans....still only 100,000 out of a world of 200 million ppl who
surf the net...poor humankind...

ICANN is the organization, which takes care of issueing top-level
domains, internet-root-servers and so forth. It will be voted by all
internet-user who are over 16, has an email-adress (even GMX or
Hotmail and similar work) and who are registered at ICANN.

So go, register and vote in the first "democratic" worldwide vote.
Maybe a small step towards a "world-government"?

Uh uh, speaking of "aussie"-thon..erm..things...

These Didgeridoo-noises, did someone already tried to get this out of
the AN1x? I tried it with ReBirth and it sounds "solala", you

Japan, of course, the USA, Germany is pretty strong, the UK has some stuff,

Well, they do have PLG150-ANX board, and there is mention (and it has been
for quite a while) that several manufacturers, including Yamaha, are working
on a rackmount that houses no less than eight of these PLG boards.

It should also be possible to route audio from one board to the other
(although the PLG150-ANX doesn't take external audio). I've also heard
rumours about a generic programmable DSP board.

But nothing is definte - just strong rumours from people who know more, but
can't say more.

Figures...they want to compete (or have to??) with Creamwares Pulsar
and Korgs OASYS.
But if Yamaha is doing it, it will probably do the same (and more)
for half of the price...:)...I love Yamaha...
Hm...a programmable DSP board...this could mean a modular synth by
Yamaha...hehehe...i´ll wait with the Elektra and watch what will
happen 2001 or 2002.

Anyhow, thank you for the info, Peter. It´s nice to have someone
with "vitamine b" (as germans used to say) on the list.

Americans are ignorant, fat and stupid.
But they gave us Techno and the Internet (oh.. and Micro$oft, but that's a
whole other story)

Also I'm trying to introduce 'Offtopic' subjects into this mailinglist. It
makes selecting messages a lot easier. Esspecially for the guys and girls

I know there are special mailinglists for chitchat (Teklabs Musicbar for

I think the idea behind PLG boards is that you have more control of what you
want of your synth. If you look at the subject of our devotion, the AN1x,
it's a very nice synth, but it has quite a few features that not everybody
may need. Notably, the keyboard comes to mind. It's probably the best
keyboard in it's price range, but if you already have a couple of keyboards
or just not enough space, it may not be worth it. How many times have people
said: "I wish there had been an AN1r"? (As a matter of fact, Yamaha had
developed it, but then they canned the project.)

So now, for about one fifth of the price, you can buy haf an AN1x. For the
moment, the number of host platforms is limited (CS6x/r, S30/80, SW1000,
MU128), but such a rack would be *very* interesting to me. And we've seen a
number of members who only have the PLG version of this synth, so I suppose
I'm not the only one.

The AN1x isn't discontinued, it just looks different. :)

And the most interesting Yamaha synthesis techniques - virtual accoustic,
virtual analogue, frequency modulation - are all available as a PLG board.
And more can be expected - I've heard rumour of a FS1r-like board (but
remember, this is rumour).

> > I've also heard
> > rumours about a generic programmable DSP board.

Actually, the PLG system is Yamaha's answer to soft synths. Yamaha's
strength lies in mass-production, not so much in building top-end material.

Mind you, they're perfectly capable of that: the very expensive VL1, the VP1
which was six times as expensive, and recently the PM1D digital live mixing
console.

Considering the Korg OASYS, that started out as a beautifully shaped
keyboard (like a Trinity, but than silver with black and a huge ribbon
controller) that was announced three times, but eventually we only saw the
spin-offs: Prophecy, Trinity, Z1, and now the PCI card.

Personally, I doubt that Yamaha themselves will come out with this
programmable DSP card. It's not in their line, after all. You would need a
development system and a whole new infrastructure that they don't have, or
are willing to support.

> But if Yamaha is doing it, it will probably do the same (and more)
> for half of the price...:)...I love Yamaha...

That PM1D is very expensive - way over US$ 50,000 I think - but that's
comparatively cheap. :)

Hm, that would be great, if it´s true. But as long as there won´t be
a working Editor for it also, editing the FSEQS (for PC, i mean)
won´t still be possible.

Hm...answer to the soft synths? Sure? I would rather think their
answer towards Roland´s and E-MU´s Plug-In boards/modules (Mo´Phatt
etc.). Like the MU128 was the answer towards the Roland SC8850. But
you are right though.

Hm, the SW1000 and DSP Factory are not soo different from a
programmable DSP card. And the AN1x is stripped down nothing else
than that. But i don´t know so much about Yamaha´s internal company
structure, so i can´t really say something about it.
I am just hopeing, and i can imagine they might do something in this
direction. We´ll see.

> What is this Elektra?
Oh, it´s pretty much a "Light-Pulsar". You get a PCI-card with three
SHARC-DSP´s on it, analog and digital ins and outs and a bunch of
software, compatible towards the Pulsar Modular Softsynthesizer.
You know like a Nord Modular, without a keyboard and buttons and
cables, but inside your PC.

Visit http://www.creamware.de or search on www.sonicstate.com (in the
news) for more info.

LOL...nichts gemeines...Vitamin B = Beziehungen, soll heißen, Du
kennst jemanden der jemanden kennt, der einen Bekannten hat, der
jemanden kennt, der bei Yamaha jemanden kennt und Du so deine
Gerüchte zu hören bekommst.

On Topic Bit:

After listening to some Net Patches- I've found a great percentage of them are "stacked"- or 2 scenes sounding at once (limiting polyphony to 5 voices).
Reminds me of Romplers that had "Wow" presets to sell themselves (the multiple layers drowned in effects patches).
Am I alone when I feel disappointed- hear a cool sound and then the voices rob & cutoff horribly when I play it ?

And--Why do they call them "scenes"? Wouldn't "layer" be more appropriate?

gripe gripe gripe- just shoot me eh?

I agree--Can't beat THE coolest Sampler of all time.

Which brings up a point- I guess my lame-ass list was old AND new synth companies- as I respect an instrument's sound - not age.

And also- France- the RSF Kobol.
