Yea there are many pro's and con's on this one.
It doesn't fix the missed first step on the sequencer on some patches, that is a hardware/speed issue.
Something to live with. Like the timing issues on the MS2000 in the arp and lack of full range of midi cc on the ION and no (other than standard) midi cc on the Micron and on and on... I am sure there are many examples of slight bugs on many synths. ;-)

The ION and Micron are not smooth OS updaters either. But with a few attempts, you get it to take the update. ;-) The real easy one was the MS2000 and Triton Extreme for me. Was very slick and fast. But that is what sort of make it more a challenge, getting to know your instrument.

My AN200 already had OS v. 1.03 in it when I found the 1.03 update at
a Yamaha website. If I remember right, Yamaha wouldn't even say
what's different about 1.03. (When asked about "the sequencer bug"
Yamaha at one time was even quoted as saing that the AN/DX 200
operating systems weren't upgradeable via MIDI.) I think there was
someone here who tried to update to v. 1.03 and ended up ruining their
AN200. I'm not saying you'd have the same result but if it were me, I
wouldn't bother. For my $0.02, unless an OS documents offering
something that I'd use or view as an improvement in my synth, then I
won't load it. e.g. with my Ion, I updated from OS 1.0 to 1.05
without hesitation but I haven't updated to 1.06 because it doesn't
offer anything that is relevant to how I use the Ion.

Thanx for replys
Yes your right, never change runnig systems, but we all did i think.
I send a ask to Yamaha support to explain os 1.03 . Perhaps there are
no changhes or fixes between OS1.02 and 1.03, or they didnt know !!
but yes without any explanation i will not do this Update, too. This
is realy strange . Have the DX200 the same sequencer Bug ?
Thanks

yep

to tell you the truth, I have not noticed it in anything I do with them... I don't use them in that way to deal with the problem. If I was, I pad the first note to a null or zero, count on it not being there... ;-) I use them more as synth modules feed by Sonar and or Extreme. They are very versatile to work with. My wife just used the AN200 to work out a rhythm part on one of her tracks. A few tweaks of the controls and she was happy to place that right in the mix. That track is destine for the prog rock group, portals IV collection this year. Sooner or later, she will get it all ready for release on her own.

The same as the ARP timing problem in the MS2000, I just use Sonar or another sequencer in to bypass it. In most case, I don't want what is there anyway... ;-) ION same deal too, I just use the NRPN's to control it via Sonar or some synthedit module I make to feed it while my hands are busy elsewhere. I did at one time want to use the ION as a midi controller for other synths, forget that. I got a microkontrol for that.

Just beware of that thing called "GAS". It will sneak up on you... ;-)

I m taut if Yamaha is answering and what. I will hold you up to date.
I bought the AN200 for same Live fun, cause small and easy to use .
Its a good change when you sitting every day in studio and make guitar
stuff. Have found my flavor for electronic music and DJing.
But in first i m a guitarist with a small studio.

It seems like the sequencer bug usually happens when the synth part is
in unison mode; as Dale mentioned, it's a probably caused by a
processor that's too slow.

> I bought the AN200 for same Live fun

I think the AN200 is hard to beat for an small, inexpensive,
analog-sounding module. If it were a 1 space rack unit then it would
probably replace the A-Station in my live rig i.e. along with an Orbit
3 and JV1010. (...if I ever played live that is!)

Make sure you use the software editor if you really want to program
the AN200 and unlock its power!

Thanx for Reply
Ok when the sequencer bug is a Hardware Problem , than os 1.03 cant fix
this. Or am i wrong ?
Xworks and software are installed. Is the PLG150 Editor the same as the
AN200 Editor ? and can i use both ?

Re: [AN1x] Re: worth Update OS 1.03 for AN200

2005-08-29 by Mark Daborn

As far as i know, the OS upgrade doesn't deal with the first note bug with the patterns. But having said that, i don't use the AN200
as a groovebox. It's just not as comprehensive as, say, the MC 303.
It is, however, a rather well equipped sound module that really benefits from tweaking with the editor.

I have done the upgrade though initially i had problems with it and thought i had corrupted the OS. My advice to anyone
thinking of doing this, is to leave it running even when it appears to have stopped. Especially at the beginning of the download when it
seems to stop for quite a while.Give it a minute or so and it will start up again.

As for the difference, i'm not entirely sure it changes much though i can't be sure because after i upgraded it, i installed a new
soundcard in my pc and it sounds better! But is it the OS upgrade or the new card??

Re: [AN1x] Re: worth Update OS 1.03 for AN200

I use soundtower's editor on my extreme, they just updated the editor. The big update is in how it now looks like 100% of the sequencer in the extreme is now accessible from the PC. I don't think I will ever use the an200, dx200 and maybe the rm1x other than a separate feed to something standalone, ever...

There is so much that I see using the editor on the extreme, just isn't funny. Too bad I don't have something like that for the AN200 and DX200.

Still both boxes can't be beat for playing. The extreme isn't a hands on friendly item like these two are. I have to use the editor myself to get into the multi-layer menus. Just not with it, with all the synths I have and use to remember each menu system. :-(

I spent a few hours with it over the weekend just toying around with the new update. Was very mind expanding.

Thanx for Reply Mark
What tool (Midiplayer) does you use for the Update ? What does you mean
with
" Especially at the beginning of the download " ?? the Midiplayer ??

and if i fail updating, can i do it again, or will it break after a
failure and going to death. Ok i know as a german my english is not
very good.

Re: [AN1x] Re: worth Update OS 1.03 for AN200

2005-08-29 by Mark Daborn

Hi!

As the OS upgrade is a midi file, i just used the XG Edit program that the editor works with.
Although i don't normally use XG Edit as my sequencer, it's pretty much the same sort of thing as all the others and
seems easy to work with.

I basically set up the AN200 to recieve the files (the FAQ tells you how to do all this, i think you need to hold down
some buttons when turning it on) and loaded the midi file into XG Edit.

Once you press PLAY in the program, it starts to download the upgrade into the machine. Though right at the start you'll
see the AN200 counting up on the display and it will stop after it gets to a point. This is where i got confused and thought it
had failed. Just leave it running for a few minutes and the counting will begin again.

I think the first part of the midi file contains the basic boot information or a header of some kind and the AN200 needs to think
about it for a while after it recieves it before continuing!

Hope this helps. It took me a while to realise that you have to leave it for quite a few minutes even though it looks like it's hung-up
or crashed.

As far as I can remember, it is actually what they call a SysEx dump.

The midi file is just the container, and you should setup your AN200 to
receive sysex dumps (consult manual for this) and then just figure out
how to send a sysex dump from your software. Even cubase could do
something like that, provided you found the correct function :)

I know it's there with the an1x editor. Now that I think of it, maybe
it's not even necessary to set it to receive sysex dumps... it just does
automagically provided you set up the right midi channels.

Thanx to all for Reply. That is the reason why i m asking for tempo
Bpm, cause it is just a sysex dump. You must set the right intervall i
think and Perhaps the Bpm of 120 can be to fast for the AN200. Or does
it not matter what Bpm i use for the dump. There is a Sytem Option
under Xworks called Sysex intervall its standing on 2000.

Re: [AN1x] Re: worth Update OS 1.03 for AN200

synths like the ION, it does matter....
I been just setting the tempo down to near 80 on most items, the problems where less but...
I am using USB midi mans 2x2 and 8x8. What works for me, may not at all for you.
I also know some who told me, they use the joystick to midi adapter with out a problem and have had problems with USB to midi. Each is different.

That's the case with me - I just use a straight joystick/soundcard to
synth MIDI connection with Bome's SendSX and my Ion OS 1.05 and
A-Station OS 2.1.02 updates went smoothly and were successful on the
first attempt.

I use many times joystick to midi adapter successful, with my old
terratec soundcard. It had no normal Midi in/outs and i must work with
joystick to midi adapter , but thats over 10 years now.
