Problems with AN1X and Steingberg MIDEX8

Problems with AN1X and Steingberg MIDEX8

2005-05-30 by Cold Jazz

Hi everyone.
Just noticed something interesting but frustrating.

It seems as if you aren't able to use the AN1X with the Steinberg
MIDEX8 midi-interface, at least not without problems.

I had the MIDEX8 installed and it was working as it should for a few
months. But when I connected my AN1X weird things happened. The MIDEX8
stopped working, it wouldn't accept any signals at all (neither
incoming or outgoing).

I tried reinstalling the interface in a new USB-port. It seemed to
work OK for a few minutes, but the same thing happened again.

It seems as if the AN1X sends "unknown" signals to the MIDEX8 that
makes it crash. Pretty odd.

Anyone has any experience with the AN1X and the MIDEX8 working together?
I have the second edition of the MIDEX8.

Thanks in advance

/Anton

Hi Anton,

I've no experience with the MIDEX8, but as a loyal list member I'll tell you
that many folks have had problems with the AN1x and MIDI. Either one or both
the computer and the synth start to choke. One hilarious screen message is
"Illegal Data" on the AN1x. Most of the chatter on the list has concluded that
the AN1x has some strange method of sending "packets" that require some
acknowledgement when doing sysex, and if the MIDI interface isn't quick enough
in providing a response, then ugly stuff happens.

Maybe you might try MIDIOX (freeware) and analyze the data stream for any
quirks.

You might want to check out Cubase.net - I'd noticed there is a
lengthy thread regarding MIDIEX performance. Might be of help.

For the record, I've seen applications crash when receiving unwieldly
SysEx dumps, such as the AN1x, but I've never seen it crash a
hardware MIDI Interface.

I got Edirol UM-880 and have had no problems. Actually AN1x even works very
well with my CS6x as they share similar CC parameters.

Okay, the thread I was thinking of is being actively propelled in the
Mac forum at Cubase.net There are references within it to similar
threads in the PC forums which elude to timing errors and issues with
SysEx dumps. Just do a search and you'll see what I mean. However, as
Ed already mentioned in this thread - the AN1x has very large SysEx
packets which have always been bothersome over USB.

Jouni mentioned the Edirol MIDI UN-880 Interface works well with his
AN1x - I can say that my Emagic MT-4 also works best amongst the USB
MIDI Interfaces I've used and I'm told the AMT-8 works well too.

Thanks for all your answers!

I actually had a look at the Emagic AMT8, and might consider switching
to this if the MIDEX8 keeps acting up.

But I've heard the AMT8 isn't totally compatible with Windows XP. Is
that true? Don't wanna go from one problem to another (would be quite
typical).

Ill check the cubase.net forum. already posted a thread about the
MIDEX8 there.

Works fine for me, but I heard that a few ppl. had problems with XP and AMT8,
what might be depending on the USB chipset, since the interface is not exactly
plug and play able. In most cases the problems were solved by using the serial
port instead.

Serial port connections and AN1x SysEx dumps have always been the most
reliable :-/ Does MIDIEX support serial port?

Another concern regaridng the AMT8, or Unitor and MT4 for that matter,
is that Emagic branded hardware is no longer manufactured and aside
from rumors of a pending Firewire Audio Interface - Apple has not
announced any replacement models.

The MIDEX8 doesn't support serial ports.
Ill have to warn everyone about the MIDEX8. It's not even a
MIDI-interface in my eyes.

The general problem with the MIDEX8 is it's way of handling (um...not
handling) SYSEX. Their new drivers doesn't solve these problems.

I had several other problems with the MIDEX8 though, which made it
impossible to even use it as an MIDI-interface.

I'm going to return this piece of crap and get a new one.

Any suggestions??

Does anyone have any experienc with the M-AUDIO MIDISPOR 8X8?

Thanks in advance

Anton

I use a 8x8 and a 2x2 usb-wise but I have only a an200 for the an series.
(lots of other synths...)
I can tell you that on OS updates to my ION, over a meg in size sysex, I don't have problems. 2x2 in use there with the MS2000 on a and ION on b.
I am on win2k, I can't run two 8x8's at once... winxp yes... I think if I ran the 8x8 serial, I could run two. I just did not want to do that when I bought a second 8x8, as I use the serial port I have for the upload into the chameleon synth. At the time I had the other 8x8, I was using dial up with a serial modem... waiting months for DSL in etc...

I am happy with midiman stuff I have. I also have a 3x8 that work great too.

but that is me... others tell me otherwise...

Cheers! Maybe this interface could take away the pain the MIDEX8 has
given me.

And SYSEX works perfectly with the 2X2 and the MS2000?
I'm using patch buddy...
