Hello Matt,
There are only a few PLG150AN users on the list to the best of my
knowledge. I'm not one of them sorry to say. Gary Gregson (the author
or AN1xEdit) was sitting in on the list for awhile and might best answer
your questions but, with Summer NAMM right around the corner, he might
be preoccupied. Couldn't say for certain. Did you check the DIY files
at the Yamaha sites? I have a few of their links on my AN1x page. The
URL is in my signature below.

Sorry this isn't a very useful reply. BTW - I think someone(?) on this
list has a Cakewalk mailing list here at eGroups. You may want to
check-in there too :-)

regards,
Jon

RE: [AN1x-list] a challenge...

2000-07-21 by Gary Gregson

Hi Matt,

Glad to see you got connected to the list!

First of all I'd like to point out that your XGedit/CW9/SW1K configuration
is actually over complicated. The setup you are using is only required for
Cakewalk versions below 8.03 (as they did not thru sysex correctly). For CW9
you can dispense with the Hwmdcable.exe programs and just use

XGedit:
In=NONE
OutA=LB1
OutB=LB2

CW9:
In=LB1, LB2, SW100 MIDI IN
Out-SW1000#1, SW1000#2, SW1000 MIDI OUT

In this case all data will be Thru'd via Cakewalk (so make sure you have
enabled MIDI thru and the Echo System Exclusive functions under the CW
global options).

To add An1xEdit for control of the PLG150AN to this setup. First ensure
An1xEdit is operating in PLG150AN mode (place a check in the Setup menu next
to PLG150AN), then simply set
AN1xEdit:
In=NONE
Out=LB1

Again the An1xEdit data will be thu'd via CW9.

[Users of Cubase VST should be aware that a similar setup will not
work....since VST is incapable of thruing sysex data larger than 512 bytes
according to my tests. Hence the big AN sysex messages do not make it!! In
this situation VST users should use the multiclient nature of the SW1K
drivers and just set:
AN1xEdit:
In=NONE
Out= SW1000#1
Note however that this means AN data will not be going via VST...hence
cannot be recorded in realtime.]

When working with the AN board on a host such as SW1K it is important to
ensure data edits are transmitted in the correct order. In particular, the
PLG150AN replaces one of the hosts XG parts. Therefore if you refresh your
setup from XGedit, you may find that the AN board no longer sounds (i.e. the
host reverts back to the native XG part). Hence you should follow any XG
refresh by a refresh synth from the AN1xEdit Utils menu. This will ensure
the AN board is correctly reconfigured.

A similar situation also exists if you decide to embed configuration data in
your final MIDI file/song. i.e. always place the XG setup data first,
followed by the AN setup data.

For more information read the An1xEidit Help file Introduction sections.

Regards

Gary

Re: a challenge... hmm... still no luck

2000-07-22 by keltik@uswest.net

Thanks for the response Gary, but I'm still missing something...
please pardon my ignorance (dim-wittedness?).

I had tried all sorts of configurations when I first read the note at
the bottom of your CW routing diagrams page, but I could never get
any config to work but for exactly following the last schematic (dual
mode w/ record). Tried with Hwmdcabl.exe #1 & 2 but no #3, as the
note suggests, but that routing fails on my system, as does the one
you seem to suggest in your reply to this thread (no Hwmdcabl.exe
instances at all, unless I'm misinterpreting)... so I'm at a loss as
for that matter. I did actually get the PLG to sound through AN1xEdit
using the 'overly-complex' (grin) routing config, but getting CW to
control it is another problem entirely.

I could not find an 'enable midi thru' option in CW9's options-
>global panel or anywhere else in the program. I did find and
enable 'echo system exclusive', but that on its own seemed to have no
effect.

Also, have you, or anyone else, any suggestions as to how to
configure Cakewalk to send messages to the PLG? Do I need to find an
instrument definition for the card? How should the
source/port/channel settings work in this situation?

Again, please excuse my ignorance. The lack of information on the
theory and practical application of MIDI on the internet astounds me
(or at least my inability to find it (in a comprehensible form (for
Dummies))). ;)

I thank you so much for your guidance and patience. You are a model
human being and a genius to boot! ;)

Matt

Re: a challenge... hmm... well... uh...

2000-07-22 by keltik@uswest.net

OK. Um. Well. It works now without any instances of Hwmdcabl.exe...
using Gary's suggested setup... which didn't work earlier.

I don't know why.

But... it does work (for now).

So I guess that leaves only the question of how to get Cakewalk
talking to the card.

So close... and yet so far. Any help on this (hopefully) last problem
will be hugely appreciated!

Matt :]

Good...but you should make sure you understand why it works now and not
before (it may be that you have different settings for thru and sysex in
different Cakewalk songs!)

> So I guess that leaves only the question of how to get Cakewalk

What do you mean by Cakewalk talking to the card? Just assign a track to the
MIDI channel the PLG150AN board is configured to receive on and set the
tracks port to SW1000XG#1 Synth. Thereafter the synth will just play.

[Note you can configure the PLG150AN to replace any one of the first 16 XG
parts of the SW1000XG. Also you can separately set which MIDI cahnnel that
part (and thus the PLG150AN) responds to. By default the card and AN1xEdit
will elect to use Part 1/MIDI Channel 1. However you can change this to your
preference using the PART and CH dials of AN1xEdit immediately above the on
screen keyboard. So for instance you could use Part16 on MIDI channel 16.
Then if you want to get really clever, you could layer the AN sound on top
of an XG sound, by setting the receive channel to the same channel as one of
the other XG parts e.g. setting Part16 but MIDI channel 1, would layer the
AN sound on top of the XG part 1 sound!]

Thanks so much Gary. After playing around with your suggestions, I
finally got it. I'm afraid I just don't understand enough about MIDI
to just know right off what you're talking about all the time, and
while I would love to learn more, like I stated earlier, it is
extremely difficult to find any information on MIDI that I can
understand. But it works now, and I do have a better understanding of
why, though still not nearly complete.

Thanks again,
Matt
