The an1x has a horrible manual...

The an1x has a horrible manual...

2004-12-03 by Matt

I just bought my an1x a couple of weeks ago as a main controller and
synth
and so far I love it - they keys feel great - the step seq. and wide
array of arp. patterns are awesome
and it sounds great too
I bought it because of it's ridiculously cheap price ($300!) for
what it does its worth way more I would pay $300 for it to be a
controller alone
I also bought it because one of my favorite bands uses it(the faint)
and I love the sounds they get out of it
other synths in my arsenal include:novation k station alesis ion
korg ms2000R(soon to be trade for a microkorg) and countless soft
synths(moog modular V mini moog V korg legacy and a ton more)
I have owned a few other synths that I have (stupidly) sold off to
buy other synths they are: roland sh-101(RED!) roland juno 106 korg
polysix nord lead 2 microkorg and a moog prodigy

but
anyways I have been reading the an1x manual and for some reason can
not retain a thing from it-the layout is crazy it looks like the
instructions for a kids toy or something

maybe it's just me - but usually I read synth manuals from front to
back (several times)
but this one I have not been able to read though once!

is there any other getting started guide programming tips or
something online?

has anyone else had this problem - or am I just crazy?

At
http://www.digitalmusicworld.com/html/hardware/SynthSeminars/an-e/index.html
you can find a tutorial to use the AN-synthesis. It might help you.

There's also another guide from Yamaha to help you get started to create
your own sounds: http://www.yamahasynth.com/download/an1x/an1xgde.zip.

And of course, you also have this user group to turn to when something is
not clear. There are some real AN1x experts here.

How is the AN1x's FM capacity?

----- Hey all

I've been looking at the AN1x for some time as my next
keyboard. It seems to have a lot; VA synthesis, ribbon
controller, 61 keys, full assignability, et. al.

I recently tested out a Yamaha DX200. I like the way
that sounds very much. What I can't find out is if the
AN1x has a DX card, and can therefore acheive what the
DX200 can.

(I used to own a Yamaha cs2x, so I'm a bit suspicious
of anything with the same chassis.)

Cheers,
    Aaron

No the AN1X does NOT have a DX card. It's a totally different synth
engine.

If you want DX200 type FM sounds, check out Native Instruments FM7.

All of my FM synths are software, all my analog synths hardware
(well, the ones I use at least).

Hey Matt,
Try the back of the manual first. There is a tutorial for building sounds.
It's a great place to start.

Ed is right, try the Voice Creation Examples on page 101. Furthermore, it's best to
approach the manual as it written - the first half is 'Getting Started' which explains how to
perform basic functions such as Scene Control, Editin Voices, Saving Voices, etc. The
second half is the 'Feature Reference' which is best left until you need to understand a
specific function in greater detail.

It helps if you've already a basic understanding regarding the principles of subtractive
synthesis - if not, there are many online resources available to you in addition to those
previosly mentioned in this thread. I would encourage you to make use of the Links and
Files section here at Yahoo! Groups for AN1x-list:

...or get a DX7 (mkII, if you can). It's a pain to program, but lots
of fun to play with. Beatiful machine.

2Aaron: judge not a product by its chassis. By the way, I still adore
my CS1x.

Cheers,
Alex

Re: How is the AN1x's FM capacity?

DX200 is built around the PLG150DX board, which is a DX-7 on a card.
Plugs into cs6x,S80,s90,etc. I have AN+DX boards in my S80. I use the
AN board much more than DX, but if you need a bizarre growling
metallic pad sound,or any other manner of weird metallic noises, FM
is the only way to do it. Does good bells, chimes, FM basses also.
You need to be either brain-damaged or a total genius to program a DX-
7 though :)

Do you really need the manual. Most things is working as any other
synth...run the editor and you can easily do other changes.
