Here's another artist that uses a certain blue synth :)

Interesting, as a mono synth ("mono" as in "not stereo"). It appears
as if there's some outboard gear connected to it, right?

Hmm, blue text on a black background... all time favourite, though
not mine.

It's in mono because in most live applications, stereo is futile. But for a
song I had it connected to my Korg ER-1 drum machine to "gate" some string
pads, then I had to plug it back into the mixer. The ER-1 only has a mono
input, so that's why.

Aside from that, no outboard gear. To the right (not really seen) are my
Korg Electribes ER-1 and EA-1, Mackie 1202 and Ensoniq ASR-10 sampler.

Is that a diss?

Er? What I mean is that you often see blue text on a black background,
but that it's very hard to read because of the contrast.

Two questions for Everybody:

1) If you're using a 'D'igital 'A'udio 'W'orkstation (ie computer multi-track hard disk recorder) for composing tracks, do you tend to record in mono? My thoughts are that with exception of 'pan', it's only the effects such as reverb, and chorus that give a 'stereo' effect. In which case this can be performed in the DAW with mono tracks - saving power and space over stereo recordings. Also, most mixers feature mostly mono inputs making it hard to accurately track the levels of EQ etc. of stereo sources. It seems that dealing with a mono source is a lot easier to work with???

2) What level do you normally set the output volume on your AN1x? I've always set it on full and hoped the headroom was sufficient enough not to clip. I've noticed that on some patches I'm actually getting extra (unwanted) distortion. Maybe I should re-save the patch with a lower volume-parameter setting so that it doesn't clip from the main volume. What do you people think about volume settings on musical instruments? Maybe the pre-amps on my AN1x are slowly deteriorating.

Cheers,

Phil

This is debateable, but as an electronics person I would recommend pots to
be up 2/3 to 3/4 full. This provides headroom for the amplifiers due to the
problem that not all line impedances are the same and by limiting the drive
on the final transistors you are preventing them from staring wide open into
whatever impedance is on the line. Some would argue that providing the most
amount of voltage down the line at any one time is the best way to keep the
signal to noise ratio high. This is true, but distortion from overdriven
finals or inputs can be nastier than a little loss of signal in the chain.

One further point about the AN1x as well as almost any synth: Signal levels
can be overdriven internally according to patch settings. Digital or
analog, there are usually some setting combinations that can result in
distortion (the nasty kind). One of the beauties of digital patch storage
is that you can store all your patches with a similar output level
(usually), this way you don't have to adjust the mixer every time a new
patch is called up.
