knob values

knob values

2004-11-25 by robotunes

hi, all...

my story: i'm searching for my first an1x, so i've been reading the
manual. the manual says that when editing, you click a knob and
position it to coincide with the parameter's current value.

my questions:

1. then you click again and resume normal tweaking?

2. does this procedure keep parameters from jumping an insane amount
when you tweak them (multifunction knobs usually produce that effect)?

3. can you use this click function to sweep the filter more smoothly
so that it doesn't step (if the stepping is the same as on the an200,
then i can live with it, as it sounds musical to my ears)? i think the
manual says you can but over only a limited range. for the life of me
i can't find that part in the manual anymore.

if all this is true, this sounds like the synth i've been searching
for since 1998, about the time the an1x was introduced. feel the irony.

a former jp8000 owner, i've been looking lately to reacquire that
board, as it was my second-favorite, next to my jp6.

then i discovered the an1x. wow! all these years i had avoided it
because i saw only 8 knobs. then i got the an200 and thought, "man, if
only i didn't have to use that frickin' computer editor, and if only
it had keys." so yesterday i downloaded the an1x manual and to be
honest, i've spent the last 24 hours crying over all the years i've
wasted.

i've always longed for a cross-modulating synth + step sequencer. i've
tried just about everything: the mc505 (a *vastly* underrated synth
but it's getting flaky as it ages, and i want a va, not s+s); the
polymorph (so-so sounds but an awesome sequencer with one fatal quirk:
you can't see the values before you edit them); nord modular (built-in
step sequencer didn't transmit midi clock. WTF?!!); the electribe
(another vastly underrated synth that i plan to reacquire); the asr-x
pro (AWESOME sampler with a crippled interface and sluggish
sequencer); the emu xl7 (never saw eye to eye with that puppy); the
evolver (perfect except it sounds to my ears more digital than
analogue. now i'm looking for analoguish sounds to complement it); the
novation ks-4 (how can you lose with 4 independent arpeggiators?
they're non-editable. ARGH!); the jp8000 (exceptional, sequences
weren't editable and the lfo didn't reset on key on, which meant saved
sequences sounded different each time you played them, depending on
the current lfo phase); the ms2000 (too thin-sounding for me); the
roland sh-32 (superb, even for s+s, but it's actually a player's
synth. i can play, mind you, but i prefer to build polyrhythmic
sequences in real time and play on top of that while manipulating the
sequences); and that led me to the dx200 (i *love* to program this
thing, but real-time tweaking yields non-musical moments that need to
be balanced by musical moments); which led me to the an200, which led
me to the an1x. sorry for the long-winded self-analysis, but at least
i spared you my adventures with several other synths, such as the
korg poly 800. ;-D

so after all that, i'm extremely hopeful that the an1x doesn't suffer
from the wild parameter jumps that happen when i tweak the an200. if
that's true, i can stop crying...

As you've gathered from the manual, the Knobs on the AN1x function in
two manners 1) Simply twist a Knob to increase or decrease the
current value in larger amounts and 2) Push and twist a Knob to make
fine adjustments, i.e., add or subtract 10-12 from the value of the
selected parameter.

Depends on your dexterity and how well the push & twist rotary
encoders on your AN1x have aged ;-) I've had my AN1x for six or so
years now (original owner) and the Knobs still exhibit a reasonable
tactile feel. However, from time to time a value will 'jump'
erraticaly when disengaging from a fine adjustment using the push &
twist desing.

Can't honestly say that I've ever noticed. If you're after filter
sweep with less zipper noise than a manual sweep, I suggest you use a
slow LFO setting with a LFO waveform. Otherwise, experiment with the
FreeEG.

You should download the JP8000 emulations Voices from Files section
here at Yahoo! Groups and see if they meet your expectations:

http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/AN1x-list/files

You'll find this Voice bank in the Yamaha Archive file. It was
supplied by Yamaha to exhibit how favorably they felt the AN1x
matched up with the JP8K. You can load these into your AN200 for
comparison.

I'm going to refer you to the FAQ so you can read up on the
differences between the AN1x vs. PLG150-AN/AN200 in regards to cross
modulation:

hi,

just few things to add to Jon precise notes (as always :-)

the an1x doesnt send midi clock out
it only synch to midi clock in
lfos dont synch to midi clock either
and lfo2 is pretty simple

u may know already .. but just in case ;-)

and did u try the Waldorf Q ?
it has almost everyhting .. u need
encoders that dont jump
a cool VA
step sequencer from the panel
etc etc etc
midi clock synch to in and out
lfos do too ! and they are 3

i would also look at the access viruses a b c and expecially the new
TI .. coming soon, even if i dont know how they handle there
parameters jumping as they have plain knobs and not rotary encoders

ciao

...and the MicroQ can be had for a song these days, but it doesn't
sounds like an AN1x (or JP8K for that matter!)

Big price differecne between a TI and a 2nd hand AN1x though ;-) But
the Virus sounds is awesome.

ha! I don't THINK soooo....ha ha!

And you know very well that as soon as you price out a 2nd hand Virus A you'll suffer an
onslaught of GAS and find a way to cost justify a 2nd hand Virus B and then you'll have
spent all that money you saved up for a 2nd hand AN1x! :-P

ehehe
nono i will do even worst i will wait for the TI and
will go for broke
.. most stupid thing ever .. since after in 1 y it will cost half of
the money ..

still ... nice to be GASssed .. soemtime (aways eheh)

thanks for the link. but with all the mod possibilities alone, the
an1x has it all over the jp8000. i just wished i'd looked deeper into
the yamaha 8 yrs ago. the lack of knobs belied the power within. i was
absolutely shattered to learn that the thing has a step sequencer! i
never knew! argh!!!! i could've skipped the fr-777 and the tb-303 and
the xp60 and all manner of synths i've bought and sold over the years.
aaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrrrgggggggggghhhhhh!!!!!!!!!

thanks for that link too. i did read the faq before posting my
questions, and i realized that i'll need to hang on to my an200 even
after i get my an1x.

and a belated very big thanks to you for your awesome asr-x pro site.
gleaned a lot of great tips for use with the big red beast. i miss
her. one of these days i'll reacquire her and add a pc1600x like i
should have done years ago. it was just so frustrating with only those
two encoders and that tiny display. and i never made sense of that
chicken systems software. but whenever i got stumped, i headed over to
your site for inspiration and would always come away stoked. thanks
again...

Nothing wrong with that plan.

You're welcome - and thanks for the kind, generous words. I've actually considered
putting my ASR-X Pro up for auction in the new year as I've hardly used it this past year in
favor of software (EXS24, Battery and pHATmatik PRO.)

I'm no longer active on asrx list, but I intend to leave ASRXCITE up and running
indefinitely. If Geocities should unexpectedly modify it terms of use where it becomes
unfavorable to myself or the endusers I'll follow though on locating a new host for
ASRXCITE, but aside from cleaning up some dead links I don't anticipate adding any new
content. Well, maybe a little something about running ASRX Editor under Classic w/ OS X
Panther ;-)
