Re: [AN1x] spyware

Hi Jimmy!

The only "spyware" which can install itself without user consent, is cookies (usually). Maybe she found tracking cookies? Those aren't really spyware, or harmful at least. Most spyware comes from clicking "yes" on dialog boxes while surfing dubious webpages ("You must download XXX to make this page work"-type of thing) or by installing Kazaa,WinMx etc.

My wife ran spybot through our computer the other day. A grand total
of over 30 spyware programs-she says most came from the Yahoo
  discussion groups. Hmmm...

No, spyware can also come with clicking on links and most spyware didn't
ask if they may install. I can send spyware behind a photo from a AN1X
or evrything else you can click on.
Since I use AntiVir personal for antivirus (free) and outpost Firewal
(agnitum) I see some links banned with the mark "AD" and then I know
these are links with spyware.
So Jimmy, yes with discussion groups you can get spyware. But I think
that Yahoo will control the messages. But do you use Chat programs? If
yes then that will be the troublemaker.
For me I use only windows 2000 and further nothing from micROTsof (in
dutch rot is the same as rotten and sof is something bad)
So don't use MicROTsof lookout or Internjet Exploder but use another
mailprogramm and Opera for browser.

Re: [AN1x] spyware

While we're on the subject, you might want to opt out
of Yahoo's "research".

Take a look at their privacy statement:

http://privacy.yahoo.com/privacy/us

Also significant about this is the following statement from the above
referenced Yahoo policy page:

"Note: This opt-out applies to a specific browser rather than a
specific user. Therefore you will have to opt-out separately from
each computer or browser that you use."

Also, I picked up on this item on the LUG:

PC users who think they might be infected by a virus or feel they
don't have adequate protection might consider downloading "Stinger",
for the folks at McAFEE (Network Associates). It's free and
disinfects 42+ of the most common (and recent) email viruses, it's
also updated quite often.

This one gets Trojans and sleepers that others miss.

http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/

Hope this helps,

Jon

Jon
I have not looked but is the group set up not to send html as well as attachments allowed in the list. I know all the groups I deal with that I am moderator is set this way to prevent this.

I have not got any spy ware from yahoo at all. I also run many of McAfee products to watch for this junk. Spybot is another product that works well too.

If they got this from the file area, well that is something to watch out for.

Listed in directory
      · Restricted membership
      · Unmoderated
      · All members may post
      · Archives for members only
      · Email attachments are not permitted

The last item is attachments. HTML not permitted is also good.

Some groups have this
Email attachments are permitted

there you may find some spyware...

I've review our Group Settings and see no global option to prevent HTML. We made a
decision _years_ ago to prevent attachments as too many individuals were
unitentionally passing along the latest viruses. The list archives have long sinc ebeen
cleaned up.

The majority of items in the Files section, i.e., .zip and .sit archives, have been
screened at one point or another on my MAc - where cross platform Mac/Win viruses
are seldom seen ;-) or on my a Norton equipped machine.

yea I don't see html anymore under management either... I know it was a option to make a group, perhaps that was a yahoo update to remove?

under individual membership, your settings, you can set to plain text or html
for those who are worried about spyware, I would set to plain text.
