  Hi Group,

I have not been using midi with my AN1x for a long time and last time when I
used it was in a different computer together with another midi interface, so
I really cannot tell is my current midi interface working ok.

The problem is that when I connect midi cable to midi out, immediately the
activity led starts to blink like crazy and AN1x is not transmitting any
midi data, not even midi notes. Midi in is working normally. Anyone has any
ideas where to start to track this problem down?

The AN1x does not transmit MIDI Clock or anyother timing synchronization protocol
therefore, there is nothing to disable.

Please see my earlier reply in this thread. The signal you are monitoring is simply the
Active Sensing transmited from the AN1x. This is not a problem and it cannot be
disabled.

Hi Jon & Others,

hmmm, strangeness just continues :( ... I got the interface working with
midi in/midi out.

But I still have the problem that AN1x edit is only
transmitting sysex data properly from the computer to the synth, but I can't
get the sysex data from the synth to An1xedit. If I request voice
from An1xedit all I get is an error message, communications failed or
something.

I tried to get sysex dump from my synth with Midi-Ox and I got it no
problem, but the file size is 5Mb!!! I think it's too much(?), so I wasn't
brave enough to try to dump it back from midi-ox to my synth.

How big file are you supposed to get from full sysex dump from AN1x?

Cheers,
TimoS

You need to be a little more specific: what is the syntax of the error message? What
brand/type of MIDI Interface are you using - USB or Serial or cheapo sound card? Wha
OS are you using? Do you have the latest driver(s) installed?

Hhhmm, the average size of an AN1xbulk dump is 224 KB - there is no possible way
you were able to dump 5 MB(!) worth of data from the AN1x to MIDI-Ox unless you
repeatedly initiated bulk dumps from the AN1x to the same file on your PC. I think
the data integrity of your bulk dump is suspect.

that or he is appending the file... very large sysex is troublesome...

Of course(?) it is about usb midi interface ;) ESI RomI/O with latest
drivers in Win2k. Can't really recall the syntax of the error message it's
just message box saying * * * * [forget to write it down back home] * * * :)
... and of course it is not possible to change any setting in ESI driver :(

Yes, that's what I suspected. I need to take my synth to our 'studio' and
test the sysex sending there, because in there we have quality PCI midi
interface. And if it is not working there, then I need to write my vital
patches down to blank charts from the manual and do factory reset.

Timo,

I wasn't familiar with the ESI RomI/O so I looked it up on the ESI web site. It resembles
the MIDIMAN Uno. I assume you are on WinXP - their latest drivers are from Feb '04
so you probably have that already.

I have used the MIDIMAN Uno along with AN1xEdit with some success under Mac OS
9 and OS X but I found it unreliable when performing bulk dumps to AN1xEdit of the
entire AN1x memory. However, if I limited the transmit or receive (initiated from
AN1xEdit) to 1-8 voices at a time it worked okay. 8 Voices at once was the upper limit
before the AN1x would choke. I would suggest you try this before/after you check it
out at your studio proper.

I'm currently using an Emagic MT4 USB MIDI Interface under OS X with terrific results
- I also found it to be the most reliable USB MIDI Interface I've tried under OS 9 -
worked perfectly with AN1xEdit. Previously I'd tried the MIDIMAN MIDISport 2x2,
Opcode MIDIport 2x2 and MIDIMAN Uno 1x1.

You might want to check the list archives as this topic comes up *very* often.

Re: [AN1x] Midi strangeness

2004-06-03 by Timo Sandholm

Hi Jon,

I think that I have memory failure in my AN1x, because I tested bulk dumps
yesterday in another computer with different midi interface and the result
was that I was able to receive only one program at time and I needed to
close AN1x edit inbetween the sessions. So it was not even possible to
receive memory of my synth manually program by program, but I need to
generate 127 different files and then copy and paste between them ...
aaarrrggghhhh! Then I need to do the factory reset :(

I always got error message Receive failed and that's all, after that
receiving the patches didn't work until re-starting AN1xEdit.

Thank you for your support, I know now what to do - even it's going to be
little bit hard :( ...

Cheers,
TimoS

Again I ask - what brand/type of MIDI Interface and what OS were you running - did
you have the latest drivers installed from the manufacturer, were you able to test with
any other hardware synths? Did you try a separate pair of MIDI cables?

It's not that I'm trying to discount the idea of a 'memory failure' it just that I've never
heard of such a thing in regards to the AN1x. And if it were so, I'd think it would
manifest itself elsewhere to begin with - such as an inability to Save Voices using the
Store routine from the front panel. IMO, that type of behavior might indicate a low
battery condition. I

For your issues I still suspect this is a connectivity issue. I can't recall anybody
reporting AN1xEdit failing inbetween bulk dumps either - the application has
generally proven to be more stable than that. If you provide a little more info on your
configuration perhaps somebody following this thread might with the same config
might chime in with an opinion.

What steps are you taking to perform the bulk dumps? You do not need to take any
action from the AN1x front panel controls when using AN1xEdit - to attempt
otherwise might confuse the app. Did you try a SysEx bulkd dump utility on both your
home and studio computers (MIDI-Ox wasn't it?) If so, how did that work out?

It might be time to perform a clean install and try over.

Jon
