SCSI answer

2000-07-06 by j.kolling@chello.nl

Okay, for all of you who might run into this problem some time..:
I mailed NCR/Symbios (the controllercard i have) support and got this
very helpful answer:

Hello Joel,

What you need to do depends upon what operating system that you are
trying
to install. If you are installing Windows NT it should boot directly
from
the CD-ROM to install to your hard drive as long as you have your
system
bios set to allow booting from the CD-ROM or SCSI controller.
If you are trying to install Windows 95 or 98 you must first create
a DOS
(FAT) partition using fdisk and format it as a bootable DOS
partition.
The
maximum size of a FAT-16 partition is 2 GB (recommended for Win 95)
and for
FAT-32 (for Win 98) the limit is much much higher.
Once you have a bootable DOS partition use the LSI Logic ASPI (DOS)
driver
installation utility to install the DOS drivers for your SCSI card.
The DOS
driver installation file may be downloaded from the following LSI
Logic web
page: http://www.lsilogic.com/techsupp/support+drivers/dos.html. The
file
you need is DOS.ZIP or DOS.EXE. Both are in compressed Zip format.
When installing the DOS drivers using the installation utility
answer
"Yes" or just the defaults to all questions. The drivers that you
need are
ASPI8xx.sys and SYMCD.sys. SYMDISK.sys is for removable drives such
as Zip
or Jaz drives. Once the drivers are installed and you reboot your
system
you hsould be able to install Win 95 or Win 98 from the CD.
One caution. As the SCSI controller is likely built onto the
motherboard.
Check with ASUS before starting any of these procedures. ASUS may
have a
differrent procedure as they are responsible for the way they
implemented
the LSI Logic SCSI controller on their motherboard.

Joel-

Sounds like a nightmare (that's why I use Macs for Music and PCs for
games).
Anyway- I have a cheap Mylex SCSI card in my PC- it seems to boot into a
SCSI search for Hard drives before attempting to load the O.S. (I guess your
SCSI controller is onboard ?).
I know you need good throughput for Digital audio- but with the "now
improved" speed of IDE drives- why aren't you running an IDE drive as your
system drive and using SCSI drives for Audio tracks ?
Just curios (sorry for off topic).

Todd :)

SCSI is getting an ol time standard there is no need for scsi anymore
If your mainboard is supporting ATA 66 / ultra ATA 66 (13,5 MB per second)
forget about SCSI -this times are gone!

I needed a SCSI controller anyway for my sampler, so i thought i'd go
all-SCSI then, because a secondhand UW SCSI harddrive is almost as
cheap as the equivalent in IDE or U-ATA or whatever.
And the advantages like multi reading and writing is definately a
bonus for audio.. I just preferred SCSI over IDE, seemed like less
chance of possible screw-ups lateron. (kindof like a guarantee)
Now that i kindof know how to make the bootup work (with some help)
It's just as easy as IDE ... the only thing that's really different
is
that it's not 'the standard' ... So less support, as i've
encountered... But it worked out anyway i guess, sortof...

Macintosh - just another name for "Computer" = screws up like anything else.
Pure bigotry.

I never understood why a thread about SCSI appeared on the AN1x list anyway.
What's the poor guy trying to do, run a hard drive from a computer. Find a
SCSI list, then.

Sorry, but that's on topic. And so is this:

Does anyone understand the hold pedal on the AN1x? Why doesn't it work on a
sequence or arpeggiation?

Because i was resting asure that there were knowledgeable people
here?

What's your problem? I haven't seen *you* posting much... at least i
post some regular stuff with my off-topic ones....

Besides... i'm a listmoderator, doesn't that count for something? If
i
thought it was too off topic (like how to repair a truck or
something)
i wouldn't have posted it.

Hope this helps.... :]

PS you don't HAVE to know everything, do you? I think (although i am
not the one to judge over that) that i have enough common sense to
determine if i should or shouldn't post something.

BTW, where *IS* that SCSI mailinglist?.... =o ]

I think a little off topic is fine... its not like we talked about scsi for a week or something...
Now, who knows how to repair a truck? ;o)
Cheers

Oh, ehm.. to answer that question.. it's going to be my wanna-be
DAW-station... Hence the SCSI part/(s)

PS I never worked with SCSI before.

Ok, thanks for the response, and the polite answer to my on-topic question.

As far as posting often, you certainly have encouraged me to post.
