AN1x as a controller for softsynths

AN1x as a controller for softsynths

2004-02-16 by pro52man2003

Hello everyone...

I am interested in using my AN1x to control soft synths such as
Pro52, FM7 and B4 within Cubase 5.1

I am able to map the 8 controller knobs to various paremeters in the
Pro 52 by using the Ctrl device and Ctrl No buttons on the AN1x.
These mappings are still in place when I reboot everything. OK so far.

However, if I now remap settings in B4 for instance, the mappings I
made in the Pro52 are now altered and I have to remap them.

What I want to be able to do is load a load of softsynths into Cubase
and know that any mappings I programme will remain. Is this possible?

Similarly, it would be great to have control knobs set up for Reasons
REX player and then have another setup for the Maelstrom synth. Is
this possible or do I need a more specialised controller such as
Edirol PCR or Novation remote etc.

Finally, can mixer volumes be controlled via midi (AN1x)?

Thanks in advance

I can't directly answer the Cubase questions, but I suspect that they are related to this next question. The AN1x has eight programmable knobs which can be mapped to any MIDI CC function, but the mappings are global; i.e., there is only one set of mappings for all 128 patches. If you want to map a bunch of controllers, and change the mappings for each soft-synth or application, I would suggest the Evolution UC-16, X-Stealth (UC-17), or UC-33e. These devices have a bunch of programmable knobs -- and in the case of the latter two, switches -- that can be re-programmed and stored in several locations. Thus, you would be able to save a set for B-4, another set for Pro-52, etc.

>Finally, can mixer volumes be controlled via midi (AN1x)?

Yes, if you put the synth into CC Mode 2 -- hold down the Assign button on power-up to check and set the mode -- then the AN1x responds to many additional parameters through MIDI CC, including:

VCO1 Level: CC#68
VCO2 Level: CC#69
Noise Level: CC#39
Ring Mod Level: CC#70
VCA Feedback: CC#63

So you are changint he Assign Knob values on the AN1x to match the CC's of the
Pro52, correct? There is CC Table available for download from NI that makes short
work of mapping CCs from AN1x->Pro52 - you might want to spend some time with
it to see if it makes your work more productive.

Okay, here's where I get lost - I interpret your 1st sentence to read you are updating
the CCs transmitted from the AN1x Assign Knobs but this implies you are remapping
CCs in B4. Which is accurate?

More than likely however, my experience is with Logic Audio not Cubase :-/ I would
urge you check out the Cubase Mixer Maps available for download here:

http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/AN1x-list/files

I don't think Reggie is still on the list to answer question on his mixer maps but you
might want to visit the forums at Cubase.net

Thanks Bruce and Jon for replies - sorry about delay getting back -
new baby wa wa wa !

Bruce, if I understand correctly, I may be able to change the CC
configuration for Pro 52 for instance, open up B4 and assign some
knobs on AN1x to cc in B4. However......i shouldn't expect the
settings i made earlier in Pro 52 to remain intact since AN1x only
has one lot of settings (global?)

I really need a special midi controller (Evolution, Oxygen 8, Edirol
PCR,Novation Remote etc that will have different pre-loaded maps of
different synths. I basically want to switch from one synth to
another in Cubase without having to keep changing AN1x knob/
softsynth paremeter info all the time.

Jon, am I right in thinking that I can download maps from Steinberg
and Reggie for different soft synths that I can use with AN1x and
Cubase?

The mixer settings I want to change are pan, volume, fx, eq etc.
will I be able to turn a knob on the AN1x and alter the depth of
Cubase's bundled flanger for instance or will I need something more
specialised like Steinberg's Houston etc?

Thanks in advance

Been there, done that ;-) Just wait until school age...

Dedicated MIDI Controllers are nice to have and Bruce lists a few models he likes (I've
got my eye on the Korg Micro Kontrol or Evolution 33e) but you can get get started
using just an AN1x.

The default MIDI CC's assigned to the eight ASSIGN Knobs on the AN1x are 41-48.
Rather than reprogram the ASSIGN knobs each time you pull up another softsynth you
are better off remapping the CC on your Pro52 or B4 to match the AN1x. I believe this
can be done within each softsynth you mention or better yet, using a Mixer Map
within Cubase.

In Logic Audio I've created Environment Layers for specific softsynth that I can then
use when necessary without having to reprogram the AN1x. A similar function can be
found in Cubase using Mixer Maps.

Yes, here at Yahoo! Groups you will find some Cubase resources for download in the
Cubase directory of the Files sections of AN1x-list:

http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/AN1x-list/files

Also, NI has resources available for registered users of Pro52 (and probably B4) that
are simple scripts to be imported into the Pro52 that remap AN1x CC's to Pro52 CC's.
Check out the Support page at NI http://www.native-instruments.com/

There are dedicated forums at http://www.cubase.net/ to help you in addition to the
Cubase Reference manual.

You can get started learning the basic's of MIDI CC's by just using your AN1x and
Pro52 - then decide whether you need a hardware controller. Houston is a touchy
subject at Cubase.net - you might want to research it before spending cash - check
out the Mackie Control Universal as an alternative.

Hello,

they are not yet available (2nd quarter 2004)
but pls do check also the new
behringer controller .. and their prices too !
motorized faders for ... 300 e !!
and 32 encoders for 220 e !!
imagine if u can record a synth manipulated knob part
and have it repeated just as it was with 8 sliders going up and
down at your wishes .. bit of cutoff bit of resonance bit of lfo speed
etc etc , or even better playing poly part with 2 hands
and have 8 more fingers that are moving the sliders :-)
can't wait to use it with my k2500 on the kb3 mode
so that the organ drawbars also go up and down automatically
yes i know u can do it via SW already but to have a controller in front of u
is much nicer, i always taught that music is all about real time
and immediacy.

Congrats! My son will be 1 the 27th, and he's now discovered Standing
Up. It's just a matter of time before we move to Running About, Breaking
Stuff and Messing Up Daddy's Synths. :)

Happy 1st birthday to your son Peter...

My daughter is 6 months now and I have had her holding down one
finger loops on things like Absynth, FM7 and Ableton live....at least
the AN1x is well built and too big for her to put in her mouth!
