I used to have 2 in my rack (totaled 12 ins, 16 outs) as master routing and control for the entire band's synths. We've since divided them up amongst 2 of us. But as for control and massaging the MIDI data stream - they're excellent. You can filter a lot of stuff (aftertouch as well as many others), change a lot of stuff (shift channels), and even produce some interesting effects (like switching synths via velocity - IOW if you hit the keys harder you'll be playing another synth). All this besides its main purpose - to route MIDI inputs to your various synths. At one time we had something like 9 controllers routed to 10 or so sound sources. It was cool, but a bit unnecessary in the long run. It was just cool that it actually worked on stage!
