Stepping on the pedal

I connected a Roland EV-5 to the foot volume input on my AN1X last week. To my surprise I noticed audible stepping as I swept the volume up and down. Has anybody experienced this with the volume input? What about the foot controller input? Is there a workaround? I was able to reduce the stepping by using the mod matrix, but I don't want to go and re-configure every patch. By contrast my Roland synth smoothly varies the volume when receiving Ctrl 7 or Ctrl 11 information from the EV-5. Thanks, Jerry
