wall of sound

wall of sound

2003-04-07 by grinderking69

i finaly have all my equipment together in one room in one space next
to my computer. i have a 909, 505, er1, and 2 keyboards(an1x and
fizmo). all of these run into a beringer 12 track mixer, then to
Presonus BlueMax Compressor(not the greatest compressor). when i
play 4 different instruments(including 909 and 505), i have a lot of
different tracks playing in one pattern. it is coming out in a wall
of sound. nothing is really seperated. i have messed with the
compressor and nothing really quite gets it. is there a quick and
easy solution?, or should i buy seperate compressors for each
instrument?, do i need EQ? i know when i record i can idividualy
compress each sound, but i am worried that the next time i play in
front of people, they will miss the depth in the music. thanx!

EQ might help but before turning to EQ look at your sounds. Cut down
the sustain, use nice snappy sounds, avoid layering the sounds too
much, cut down any distortion, any effects-simplify.

Good luck. Getting good results with a massive wall of sound is
difficult, but well worth the effort. You are essentially the
conductor arranging for an electronic orchestra.
