Fw: (mono)L output on stereo effects

Fw: (mono)L output on stereo effects

2003-04-03 by James Acker

I originall sent this question to another list, but I also have an An1x and wondered the same about this.
Anyone know...basically (see below) the question is, if I have both L & R plugs plugged into the output of the An1x, and have effects like chorus or phase shifter, but I only record the L signal (recording mono) will it screw up the effect? I think they compensate if you only have the L (mono) jack plugged in but I am not sure...

For more explanation of the problem see the rest of the mail.

I just picked up (finally!) a patch panel. It isn't expensive, it's a Behringer :-)
and I am jazzed about finally not having to plug in and out and rearrange everything all the time.

It took me a while to get the concept, the manual wasn't very clear, til I spent enough time to find out that "normalised" is mostly just routing the back panel through to the bottom, and only using the front to interrupt and change the routing. I spent some time planning this. I don't know if they all have it but the Behringer lets you set any of four different modes for each module (24 modules)....straight through, half-normalised, normalized, and parallel (splitting the signal to three outputs). Almost too many options.

One thing, and I have asked this here before I think..but I don't remember what the outcome was. Getting old.
Anyway, here's the thing.

When I use the V-amp, the RNC, or one of my keyboards and I want to record mono, I just pull out the right phone plug and use the left. I believe that many stereo outs on these kinds of things, have a mechanism in the output jacks that will compensate...but I have never been sure about this. I went through all the manuals and none of them really say. For one instance, if you take an effects box (the V-amp actually is configurable from the front panel to be able to send the effected signal out of one jack of the two and a split unaffected signal through the other...so it won't be a problem) like the Digitech RP-7. When I use and effect in stereo, and have both jacks plugged in, but only record the left one in mono....do I lose something? I assume that if there is a chorus effect that depends on stereo that it would just phase in and out if you only have one side...on the other hand, chorus pedals only have one mono, out...this is what I want, the adjusted signal.

Am I explaining this clearly? I want to be able to have a chorus, with both outputs plugged into the unit, but only use the L (mono) channel. Will that work? Or do I really need to pull out the plug on the unit?

I am guessing it makes no difference on the RNC...but if anyone thinks it does, let me know.

Thanks
Jim

Basically, yes. Effects is more or less the only reason why the AN1x
should have stereo outputs, since it's a monoaural machine.

The only exception to this is when you hard pan dual or split voices to
either channel.

All right Jim, now you've confused me since I always send stereo to the mix.
Some keyboards sense the mono out during power-up and compensate by forcing
both channels to the one marked as mono. Some are dynamic and realize that
the other channel has been unplugged.. but IIRC this is rare. Usually a
mono send is detected on power up.
