How about the Event ezBus? It has a lot of inputs, spdif, optical 
and usb (so you  don't even need a soundcard, just USB!) (24-
bit/96kHz) It has a lot of routing flexibility. They cost $600, only 
$50 more than a 14 channel Mackie and I think they are much more 
suited to PC based musicians. Oh yeah, you can use it as a midi 
control surface as well!

(It only has two balanced (mic) inputs!)

What an excellent suggestion - Event ezBus. As an alternative, 
you might look at the Tascam US-428 or US-224 
http://www.tascam.com/ These are probably best suited for 
integrating with you DAW then for use in a live performance but if 
your kit includes a laptop computer it might just fit the bill.

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
