AN200 As a Synth Module ??

AN200 As a Synth Module ??

2002-12-17 by oddangle1 <arcaxis@aol.com>

How is the AN200 as a 5 voice synth module. I've read in this group
it is very close to or the same as an AN1X in its sound. I can't
locate any demos that play voices by themselves, only demos in the
context of the beatbox that it is. And the patch listing out of the
manual only gives a hint of what the voices are that are programmed
in the unit. I presently have a DX200 which can do all the DX7 very
well. I would like to complement it with VA that can do good analog
strings, horns, pads, etc.
Thanks for any help or suggestions.

Others have alluded to the minor differences in architecture between
the AN1X and the AN200. They tweaked (improved) the AN1X architecture
slightly even though they took out five voices.

There is one other difference I would point out. If you take
a "Unison Mode" an1x patch and use the amp feedback parameter at
about 100 with all the levels (VCA, Osc1 and 2, etc) up, you will
notice that it sounds different when the volume knob is full, than it
does when the volume knob is at 9 o'clock(one quarter full). It's
smokier at higher levels. This is old fashioned analog clipping
that's happening becase of the way the gain stages are set up going
into the (analog) pre-amp. Which is why the volume knob controls the
amount of "smoke".

I believe the gain stages are better matched on the AN200, and you
lose out on this additional source of character.

Jerry
