How to create a 'meow'?

How to create a 'meow'?

2002-09-02 by Peter Korsten

OK, silly question time. I'd like to create a cat-like sound with the
AN1x (which means I have FreeEG). It doesn't have to be authentic, but
the first thought, when you hear the sound, should be 'cat'.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

- Peter

No luck so far...been playing around with OSC Sync and PEG
Envelopes but can't quite nail it. A 'purr' seems to be more
feasible than a 'meow'. Have you considered sampling a
household pet instead? ;-)

Jon

Listen to track 9 , The Ballet of the Chicks in their Shells, on Tomita's
Picture's at an Exhibtion (Mussorgsky). There is a cat-like "meow" sound
done with his skillful manipulating of pitch and filtering of what is
probably nothing more than a sawtooth. Might give you some clues as to how
to approach it on the Yammy.

Hi Peter,

You might be interested to know there's a 'meow'-like patch in the JP-8080,
appropriately titled 'Cat Conversation' (P3:B87).

The JP-8080 features a closely similar architecture as the AN1x, with 'FM'
coming under 'X-MOD' (Cross Modulation) and 'FreeEG' the same concept as
'Motion Control'. The only discerning difference is JP-8080 has the
'feedback oscillator' (think guitar feedback tones) and the AN1x has the
'feedback' control which really adds substantial weight to the AN1x's girth.
The AN1x features an extensive effects engine while the JP-8080's is quite
basic, just a level control on the distortion, for example, but does allow
for tempo-matched effects and LFOs.

Ah, but I digress...

After a quick analysis of the 'Cat Conversation' (P3:B87) patch in
question...

Mostly a Pulse Wave (OSC2) through a band pass filter and pitch envelope ie.
"meeeeeoooowwwwwww". It's mixed slightly with a Sawtooth (the infamous
'Super Saw' to be precise) that's stays on the note ie. no pitch envelope.

Hope that helps. Let me know if you come up with anything remotely
successful.

I got a useful meow and woof from a GR700 (a Roland guit-synth with a 2 osc
engine and a single envelope generator).
I think you need to apply an inverted ADSR to the pitch and non-inverted to
the filter and amp. Tweak the level applied to the pitch to get the correct
ascent and decent of pitch. The filter envelope should be applied with care
to get the oww sound.
