Questions 'bout hooking AN1x to my computer

Questions 'bout hooking AN1x to my computer

2002-05-31 by blackwoodtebo

Ok, my AN1x should arrive in the mail next week, so meanwhile i am
contemplating how i am going to hook it up to my computer. I have
never messed with a "real" synth through a computer so i am really
nervous about doing something wrong, so these may seem like stupid
questions to many. I have a soundblaster audigy platinum which has
midi DIN interface in the front. Should i hook the AN1x to the
audigy with the computer shut down and then turn the computer on?
Should i leave the AN1x turned off until the computer is turned on or
do i turn it on before i power the computer up? Can i use the
AN1xedit program with my audigy or do i need a special soundcard to
use that program?

I am sure i will have plenty of questions once i get it all setup and
start trying to download patches and use the anxedit program, but for
now these are just the ones i need answered so i can get started.
Thanks!

I, personally, have never had any problems with either scenario, but some users report problems when turning on the computer with the AN1x already powered on and in place. I don't think you can damage anything -- MIDI is a pretty robust interface, and was designed to withstand power cycling -- but you may find that one of the ways causes "MIDI error" kinds of messages on the AN1x.

You should be able to use any interface. I say "should," because some users have had problems with certain interfaces under Win2K and WinXP. I have had issues with the joystick interface on my Via motherboard under Win2K. Under Win98Se, I've had much better luck, and have yet to find an interface that doesn't work with ANY musical/MIDI program.

Welcome to the list,

You can unplug and plug MIDI whilst 'powered-up' at any time without any
fear of damaging anything.

Everything else sounds good to go... all you need now is your AN1x!

Please get back to us if you run into any probs.

Phil

(PS. I assume you've discovered the files section from the group's Yahoo
page? That should keep you busy with patches for a while!)
