Update on my MIDI An1x Edit problems

Update on my MIDI An1x Edit problems

2002-05-23 by James R. Acker

Hey guys,

Last night I am happy to announce I acheived nrivana and was able to use AN1x Edit, BOTH for uploading AND downloading...a first for me.

The main problem, I hinted at before, was the splitter cable from the Soundcard Game port. I had swapped the two MIDI cables back and forth and the problem remained, but I finally came around and bought another splitter cable. I should know by now...that even though it "doesn't make sense" that a cable that kinda worked before, without being run over by a truck or anything...suddenly doesn't work. But that happens. Even when it is pretty new.

I got to the point where it HAD to be either the cable or the card...okay, OR another application taking over but it was the damn cable :-)

I first put the new cable on the SB16 card. The first thing I noticed was that it no longer "jammed" the AN1X. It still didn't work though. But it was different. I decided at that point that even if I could get the old card working I would want to change over to the PCI 128 (newer) card anyway so I changed it out. Again, didn't hang up the AN1X. Then I played with the MIDI devices in the control panel, and trid getting NOTE ON and NOTE OFF to show itself. Man did it ever feel good to finally see that. And then I brought up the An1X Edit....and I could load patches to it, and from it...

Fantastic.

Now I have to try and remember all the neat, great tricks you can do with AN1X edit. I LOVE this program. It has taught me WAY more in minutes than hours AT the keyboard trying to program sounds. It makes life so much easier.

I still hate Windows....seems like everyone I talked to has accepted that when things go bad, "reinstall Windows" is what they always advise. Reinstall the drivers 5 or 6 times, etc.

But I am happy now. I just want it to be able to help me edit the sounds...and it opens up a whole other side to the AN1x that just is incredible.

Thanks to all who helped with this, I DO appreciate it.

Jim

Hi Jim,

FYI: That "splitter cable" is a bit more than just a cable. The MIDI connections on a joystick port are not suitable to directly connect to a MIDI port, and have to be processed with some relatively simple hardware. (For those who are interested, the joystick signals are +5V logic levels, while MIDI is a current loop communication scheme.) Each adapter cable or breakout box contains this hardware, and 1) some versions are more compatible than others; and 2) the electronics could have been damaged.

Regards,

-BW
