All ringmods seem to sound different- one of my signiture sounds was created
using the AN ringmod- very radiophonic- especially in the lower regions. My
favourite RM comes with both the EMS VCS3 and the Korg MS50 (same chip)- but
unfortunately these models are silly money now (however the chip is still
avaliable and costs a mere £2- what is this world coming to??- The ring mod
in the Nord Modular SUCKS!!!- so sorry for being a little vague- I've just
woken up- but I do like RM's....ho hum......!

Hmmh, It's funny how talking about sounds makes you feel like
tweaking. My AN1X is not with me at the moment though. :(

Your expression radiophonic, made me wonder what would happen if I
put a couple of sine waves through the ring modulator, with the pitch
of one of them being controlled by the X ribbon, or a S/H lfo.......?

Something to look forward to. :)

One of the other things I noticed... (Not disputing that the AN1X
Ring mode is a little more clinical & precise than many analog ones)
is that if you pass the oscillators through with the same pitch (no
detuning), they seem to have a slightly looser pitch coming through
the ring mod, then they do plain. So I think of it as a way to add
that analog osc drift feeling, which I wish they had modelled better
in the AN1X.

Drifting off topic... I reckon most of the VA's do a good job with
monophonic and single oscillator emulations. They just don't seem to
capture how oscillators and sounds interact... yet.

Well the beginning of the Doctor Who signiture is 2 sines. One constant
(fixed) and the other swept through the entire range (I know this because I
discovered it when I had an MS50- using the LP filter as the second sine
oscillator, and because it's range is so incredible)- My brother almost beat
me up- 'cos I tried it through his (then) brand new Marshall stack
hahahahahaha!

Yes I agree with you there- It almost warrants buying another Moog Rogue- a
little synth I dearly miss. I think it's got something to do with the
stepping- with that programmed to be musical rather than being unmusical-
which is a shame.

i'm struck, too, by the phrase "radiophonic"--would you mind posting that
patch to the yahoo site? i'd love to hear what you're doing as i'm always
looking for lo fi sounds.

and speaing of lo fi, who would like to have a go at the lead sound from dr
who--a classic that i'd love to emulate!

cheers,

the signiture lead sound was done with something called a 'wobbulator'
(nothing to do with fixing cars)- It was basically a bank of 16 sine
oscillators connected to a keyboard- fed to a revox type reel to reel for
echo fx. They also had another lovely device called "the crystal palace"- an
early blueprint for the 'leslie' rotating speaker cabinet?- but made of
transparent perspex- so you could watch the inner workings (oOOOOhhh I just
cream everytime I think of that!!!!)

It's worth tracking down some of the early stuff made by "Silver Apples"-
another one of Warhol's "Exploding Plastic Inevitable"-(but rather
overshadowed by the Velvet Underground I'm afraid)-a very underated band- but
Simeon used a similar device to the wobbulator- controlled by a typewriter
keyboard- producing something not dissimular to the Detroit Deep House sound-
but back in the late 60's- named aptly- "The Simeon"!

I'ts really easy to do- much better not to post it- because by trying to find
a similar effect- you will come up with an approximation which will be
uniquely yours!

- well that's the perspective I look at it from anyway!- sorry- no offence.

Tom,

Don Leslie sold his first speaker (the Model 30) on Dec. 24, 1940, so the crystal palace was more of a Leslie clone of sorts.

Don't tell me you know these things by heart. It's scary. :)

No, but I've archived a lot of Hammond-Organ-related information on my PC, and I have a good memory for what is where! The information actually comes from Harvey Olsen, who is one of the leading "experts" on Hammond lore, and a friend of Mr. Leslie. He published a couple of articles on Leslie trivia, including the production date of the first Leslie Speaker.

Time for some more nerd info from me....being a lover of leslie speakers (i
haven't actually got one- my partner would have a heart attack if I would
bring one into the house!)- Apart from all the usual Pink Floyd and Tangerine
Dream sounds- check out "Cluster II"- I think it's still availible on CD-
with no less than 10 leslie's all going at once at different speeds- THAT'S
Psychedelia for you!!........now where's my dp/2......?

Bruce,

Don't you also participate, and moderate, on lists related to
virtual organ emulations as well as the Hammond lists?

Jon

Jon,

Yes, I moderate a Yahoo list called "CloneWheel" that deals with Hammond and Leslie clones and simulation. Although mostly for dedicated Hammond B-3 copy instruments like the Hammond-Suzuki XK-2 and Korg CX-3, I wrote an article -- technically, a series of them -- on getting a Hammond sound out of various synths and ROMplers called "Hammond Sounds for Alternative Tastes." It's available at --

    http://music.ashbysolutions.com/clonewheel/simulate/alt_hamm.html

Contributions on the use of specific instruments is always welcome.
