Even if you use the ring modulator correctly, it doesn't have the
wild distorted out of tune craziness that a standalone analog ring
modulator has. Probably the AN1X's is more useful, I don't know.

Funny how everyone has different perceptions. I always felt that the
ring mod was one of the best modelled features of the AN1X. It may be
that with the analog ring mod, you are used to sending a steady pitch
as one of the tones. In orer to get this effect, you would want to
use the mod matrix to defeat the pitch tracking on one of the
oscillators so it stays at the same pitch.

Here's two patches I do get some fun out of the ring mod.

Patch 1 - Ring modulator on the attack

In the mixer I have osc 1 set to about 80, ring mod set to 127 and
osc 2 set to 0. Both oscillators are tuned to the same pitch. I have
a pitch envelope depth 30-63, and decay about 15-30 modulating ONLY
osc 2 which is going to provide the interest in the ring modulator.
For extra oomph. I have the VCA feedback running at between 90 and
110. Everything else in the patch would be like a standard, fairly
bright lead, bass or brass sound.

Patch 2 - Ring modulator explosions

Same general parameters as patch 1 but I would set the pitch envelope
decay to 63 and leave the envelope depth at 0. in the mod matrix I
would set ribbon x to modulate the pitch envelope depth. Then I go
ahead and fine tune the patch into a nice sounding lead. When I play
the lead, the ring modulator doesn't do anything usually. But if I
touch the ribbon anywhere except center, I can trigger an upward or
downward explosion. The VCA feedback is key to the explosion. I try
to get it just south of the point where it's about to start grinding.
Then the explosions sound really cool to me.

I love that ring mod.

Got a chance to play with a friend's home grown ring modulator. With
that, the carrier frequency is a constant. With the AN1X the carrier
frequency is osc A so the carrier frequency changes note for note. Is
that correct?

What settings are poeple using for the ring mod?

Hey Jimmy:

Yeah the ring mod comse into own with non-consonant frequencies. I
use it just to support the basic saw waveforms, but more
interestingly:

It works great with sine-ish waves where it's in-hamonic overtones
can play to good effect. You can bring it in and out of the mix or
sweep the pitch of one of the oscillators for snarl.

I do this on my standard whistle patch.

Osc 1: pitch =+12, Edge = 0
Mixer Osc 1 = 126 Osc 2 = 0, Ring Mod = 0, Noise = 0

I might have LFO modulation of pitch for vibrato. Then I add:

Osc 1= pitch = -37, Edge = 0

Then I map Ring mod volume to Ribbon Z. This way I get a snarl/growl
when I hit the ribbon. Another way to use it as a performance tool.
is to keep the ring modulator always on and play with the ptich. I
set oscillater to -64 pitch. This creates a vibrato. Now sweep the
pitch of Osc 2 upwards with the knob and than back down to its
standard position of -64.

What a great tip, thanks Jerry. It never occured to me map Ring Mod to the
Ribbon...doh!
