A present for all....part 1, snare 909

A present for all....part 1, snare 909

2001-12-21 by Bastiaan van de Werk

Okay, here's a mini tutorial / diy 909 snare for your an1x. It was created when I was toying with my blue gem since my nova couldn't deliver me the sounds that I wanted.

Okay...909 snare....they have lots of pure noise and a distinct bottom end....the sound I'll be showing is the snare you hear a lot on harder gabber and techno tracks...(usually sampled tho)

anyway...make sure to play the sound on the keyboard every step of the way to hear what is happening. (parameters that I don't mention: keep em as they are) I assume you know your way around the keyboard so don't bother asking me what buttons to press.

We will start with a 130 init voice....scene2 (we will use scene 1 in another tutorial to make a nice kick/snare combi)

VOLUME TO 127...we want slamming sounds...

VCO OSC1 = pulse and Edge = 0
.. a sine wave (ppk anyone? just add some delay and verb!!, no don't!!!)

Pitch decay to 9 and pitch depth to 63. This will emulate the stick hitting the snaredrum's skin....it will give a distinct 'tick' to the sound....

Shift the sound -24 seminotes since we *might* just need the left handside of the keyboard for the kick.. :)

Okay, since it's percussion we need an appropriate amp envelope: attack = 0, decay = 64, sustain = 0, release = 50...this will allow you to play the sound with a shorter and a longer decay time....

So, the sound is defenately percussive but a bit wimpy, i hear you think ....turn the feedback knob to 128 and try again! You did check osc1's volume is set to 127 did you? :)

Still it's not a snare...it's something *very* close to a half decent kick...so NOW put the noise value to 127 (or anywhere between 80 and 127)

So what's next? Hmmm...what about some filtering....I like the sound of the BEF best put at a cut-off of 16 and resonance of about 12. This works best when you sweep it in mixes (in my ears) and seems to attenuate frequencies....I know this might sound like bogus but just try it.

Top of by setting the eq to LF=80 boost = +12 to even further boost the bottom end AND boost MF at 1k with about 12 db for that classic processed 909 snare sound....

I hope people like this 909 snare and I hope someone will produce an ever better one! Play with the cut off frequency and the amount of noise for a broad range of snares and other percussive sounds....now just see if I haven't forgotten to mention any parameters....

Someone else promised us a lead, didn't he?

Cheers,

Bastiaan

It's awesome.....!!!!!!!!!

I'm trying to synth some sounds for gabber productions, but no exit at
this time...... (my sampler takes them, but it is no creative and you
are hearing a common sound). I would like to make any of these
sounds........

Have you any recommendation???

Thank you very much for your tutorial!!!!

It is the first time I use PLG-150ANX for making a sound with
coordination.... ;-))
