The Yamaha AN1x Synthesizer mailing list

The VCA feedback parameter is one of my favorite features in this 
synth. I find that when I drive it up to about 90-110, it makes a 
number of my synth voices 'smoky' in a very musical way that cannot 
be matched by efx like overdrive, distortion and amp sim.

Trouble is....the amount of smokiness appears to be proportional to 
the volume on the main volume knob. (left hand top corner of 
synth) ??????

I am telling myself that this is a digital model, and the main volume 
(which I assume is a downstream amplifier) could not possibly be 
related to the amp feedback parameters characteristics. Yet when I 
turn down the main volume, I get the same type of reduction in smoke 
that I get when I turn down the VCA volume control.

Could this be so? If so why? And is there a way for me to get around 
the practical problem this presents: 

Most of my patches go into the mixing board at 50% main volume and I 
don't want to tell the sound guy..." I am going to play a smoky patch 
at this point... turn down the gain on my signal, because I am going 
to double the gain at the synthesizer for this particular patch"

I guess I could go back and redo all my patches for volume, but it 
may have impacts on timbre, and I hate to not have the use of that 
master volume control. Any advice?

PS: This thing rocks.

It's because An-1x's main outs are very easy to overload ...
I have a problem that many of my patches have to be max at 1o'clock to be
clean.
What you are having is a simple overload (besides overload in VCA Feedback
unit) at analog output.
IMHO.
