Aural Exciter

Aural Exciter

2001-12-06 by tuskermusic

Wonder if anyone can give a brief explanation of the Aural Exciter
Variation Effect (#9)

It seems to me that it segments the frequencies above the cutoff
frequency, runs them through an overdrive and then reconstitutes the
signal. (or something like that)

Is this correct, or does it also do some animation (like a chorus)?

Is this effect unique to Yamaha? Is it similar to the sonic maximizer
(BBE)?

Sorry for so many questions. I'll take whatever you know.

Thanks in advance,

Jerry

Hello, No it's not unique to Yamaha, Aphex actually made the original I
think you will find. I can't tell you exactly how it works, but from
what I understand it 'adds' some frequencies that the brain is
particularly drawn to and finds it hard to ignore (apparently babies
crying and women screaming also produce this frequency!), not sure what
else it does.

So is Aural Exciter a copyrighted name? Aphex is still very much in the
business .
Doesn't Aphex have any kind of control over the use of the term "Aural
Exciter" in the same fashion that Dolby owns the rights to that term for
it's noise reduction circuits. Does this mean the Yammy is actually using
the authorized Aphex effect system? I've seen other companies refer to
effects they call "audio Enhancers" and other such terms that imply the
same result but are surely not the same as the Aphex system.

AFAIK Yamaha actually quote Aphex in their blurb somewhere, so, I would
have thought that they are authorized users of the name.

Reg is correct - if you look in the Data List pamphlet you'll find the
'registered trademark' disclaimer regarding AURAL EXCITER. The URL for
the Aphex Systems web site is: http://www.aphex.com/

You can see it on the bottom of your AN-1x -
on mine it is prinited that Aural Exciter algorithm is a registered Aphex.....
and so on.

You're on the right track. I'm not sure if "runs them through and
overdrive" is correct, but the Aural Exciter seems to add a high frequency
presence, and maybe even some extra harmonics (???)

>Is this correct, or does it also do some animation (like a chorus)?

I don't believe so.

>Is this effect unique to Yamaha?

No, it's licensed from Aphex.

>Is it similar to the sonic maximizer (BBE)?

The END RESULT is similar. Whether the two methods use the same process is
difficult to figure out, as both companies consider their process something
of a trade secret, and so are not very forthcoming on the details.

I think u can use it for boost mid to high frequencies, to add sharp and
clear to your sound.

Sounds like add some high harmonics that the dry sound haven’t or have at
very low levels.

Mae be like an eq for boost high frequencies, but with the diference that
not work over all the spectrum like a normal eq.

Mae be i’m wrong, i write this based on my own experience.

Thanks everyone for your comments. I have a better understanding of
the effect now. I wish they would have allowed you to modulate the
Aural Exciter's cut-off frequency in the mod matrix. It would be neat
to keyboard-track it like a filter. Still, it's great to have it. :)
