AN1X vs other virtual analogs; SoundDiver

AN1X vs other virtual analogs; SoundDiver

2000-02-29 by analog8

Glad to finally see an AN1X list with some traffic!!

Here's an ice breaker for you. I picked up my AN1X cheap
during the blowout. I also have a JP8000. Although I've
got a ton of patches and software that supports the AN1X,
and almost nothing for the JP, I always find myself going
back to the JP because a) the sound just seems richer and
b) the controls on the AN1X drive me crazy! Having said
that, I use the AN1X on a lot of tracks, but almost never
as the lead. What do other people think, and what sort
of sounds do they find the AN1X best for?

Perhaps we should also start putting together a SoundDiver
library file of all the available patches for the AN1X? The
AN1XEdit program is quite good but from memory it is
limited to 128 patches per file. Who else is using SoundDiver?

Hi Todd,

I bought mine during the blowout too, and altough I haven't completed many tracks with it yet. I use the pads/strings a lot. They sound really great . . . I think. I also use it as part lead for dance tracks. But you're right about the controls Roland seems easier. But try to find some support, Yahama is better at that point. But don't be alarmed, there are a lot of people tweeking knobs on an jp8000 and a lot of those people have internet . . .

And about the 128 voices . . . that's one bank. if you want to load an bank up an scroll trough it . . . ? I never use it that way though . . . so maybe it is an idea? ( I don't use sounddiver by the way).

I am using Sounddiver too and frankly, I find An1x edit easier and better to
use for editing. I use SD for managing patches in combination with Logic
Audio Gold 4.0
and it's autolink function with SD. I personalluy think that An1X Edit, and
.an1 format files are much easier for everybody on this list to handle (and
An1x edit is free :-))

Glad you're happy with the JP8000. Personally, I just didn't bond with
it :-/ I like the AN1x for, well, just about everything! I'm
particularly fond of it for Pulse Width type pads but I also rather like
those 'imitation' frequency mod basses. There a little warmer to my
ears than using a 6 Op (or 4 Op) FM Synth (not the same thing really so
not a fair comparison.) I've not spent much time programming lately but
I'd like to dissect the 'Illusion' preset Voice and put it back together
after my own tastes. I think it's a great example of the AN1x creating
an evolving atmospheric pad.

So is the AN1x ;-)

It's an interesting idea though and I can see where SD users would find
it a real time saver.

.AN1 format is pretty much the standard for users sharing AN1x voices
and I really don't feel we should needlessly try to change at this late
date. I recently put up a demo of SoundDiver on my Mac but when it
wouldn't let me receive(!) from my AN1x I hit the delete key. I can
understand disabling the 'Save' function in a demo but not being to MIDI
receive? C'mon. That said, I'll give it another go in a month or so.
Just got my hands on a proper demo of Logic Audio from Emagic to try
out. Once I'm comfortable with that in a few weeks time I'll give SD
another go. Maybe the demo CD has more current version that behaves differently.
