Percussion

2001-10-15 by Bastiaan van de Werk

LAtely I've started using my an1x not only for lead pads and fx (in which i think it excells above anything I own) but I've also created some killer Bassdrums...really nice and heavy slamming 909 type stuff, hiphip basdrums and whatnot.... whic i will sample and use in tracks...they sound so fresh and new compared to your regular bread and butter 909 or 808.

I never realized it could actually be done on my an1x...at least not this good. BUT snares, toms, hats and other percussion are still a bit out of my league. Anybody got some tips or pointers on how to create those??? ... My snare just sound too wimpy...no snap...no bottom....etc. Tips please???

You might download this bank of Voices (originally from Yamaha) and
load the SE&PERCS.MID This is a bank of 32 sound effects and percussion
voice that might be along the lines you're looking for:

Have a look at:

http://www.waldorf-music.de/attack/attackdrumsounds.pdf

It's really a tutorial for making classig analogue drumsounds on the Attack
VSTi, but it's applicable to any Analogue or VA synth...

That's an excellent resource. Thanks for pointing that out :-)

I'd skimmed that some months ago but never made time to sit down with

Indeed very nice. Could someone please upload it to the file-section?
I am having problems printing it out (saving doesn´t work either...)
:(

Oh and if you want some extra real analogue power for the AN1x, look

I can upload it if you like but we're getting tight on space so maybe
just on a temp basis...?

Hi Tom,

Yes, a very slick looking rack piece. Slightly disappointing is the fixed(?)
Pulse Width Modulation at 12.5%! Maybe that can be updated?

By the way, do you know what retail price it will have (in US$)?

Cheers,

Phil

RE: [AN1x-list] ATT: Gary Gregson re: AN1xEdit and Mac OS-X

2001-10-21 by Gary Gregson

Hi Phil,

To be honest, I don't know...I've never tried it :-(

I did install MacOS X on my machine, but removed it and went back to OS9.

It's worth noting that Yamaha only commissioned me to develop a Windows
version of An1xEdit. I produced the Mac version in my own time (together
with some of the later additions to the Windows version). To reduce porting
time to the Mac I used the old (now discontinued) Microsoft MSVC Macintosh
Cross compiler. Hence if the code this produced doesn't carry forward to
MacOS X, it is unlikely that I will find the time to produce a native
version :-(

Re: ATT: Gary Gregson re: AN1xEdit and Mac OS-X

2001-10-21 by jondl_2000@yahoo.com

FWIW...

Emagic is slightly ahead of the curve porting their product line to OS
X - including SoundDiver. Since I've already bought into using Logic
for the past year I intend to pick up a copy of SD somewhere down the
line for it's AN1x editor. Actually, I'm interested in the usefulness
of SD as a device specific librarian to integrate with Logic - much
like my old Opcode Vision/Galaxy combination. I wonder if MOTU will
update Unisyn? Probably. Does it offer a AN1x module?

As an alternative, you could maintain a seperate boot partition along
with OS X on your hard drive and boot into OS 9.x.x as an interim
solution until you're ready to move past AN1xEdit. I suspect many of us
will maintain such a setup until our 'favorites' are either no longer
supported or less necessary then we find them to be at present.

I have to tell you - after reading some of the recent specs on OS 10.1
I'm finally getting excited about X. Only catch is - what to do with
the plethora of 2nd hand, serial port MIDI Interfaces that will litter
the 2nd hand market? ;-) ha haha

Jon

The official word (pasted below):

Phil (...now I just need to speak to them re 12.5% PWM!)

Hello Phil,

Thanks for your interest in the M.A.R.S.
Momentary the M.A.R.S. isn't available.
We think that we'll have the first units at the beginning of next
year. I also can't give you an exact price for the synth, but it
will be under 1.000,00 DM, at any rate.

If we have an exact price and a date of delivery you'll find that
on the mars-site (www.marsynth.de). I can also inform you by
email if you want.

For people who haven´t checked the website yet...Vermona used to be
the brandname of an old east-german company who built synthesizers
during the cold war. After the wall came down, people who used to
work for that "Kombinat", founded the new company hdbaudio, which
were doing some things for "Touched by Sound" like e.g. the long
announced Mephisto (i guess the M.A.R.R.S. is a side product out of
the Mephisto). Last year they bought the rights back for the name
Vermona and already did two really nice gadgets, an analogue
filterbank and an analogue phaserbank. Definately worth to check out.
I am looking forward to the MARRS, since it´s going to be the first
affordable real analogue synth (ok the second...the MB33 from MAM
doesn´t count...;) out of Germany.
Hopefully they will also finish the "Mephisto" (guess they will
choose another name) also in a couple of months.

Hi Tom,

You mentioned the MB33. What are your opinions on it, if you don't mind me
asking. The Mk2 version is probably the better of the two, but both are
cheaper than the M.A.R.S. Were you a little turned off by its limited 303
sound? If I come across one secondhand, I might pick one up.

Yes indeed and for almost the same price of a MB33II you can get a
Waldorf Pulse which i forgot to mention...another affordable German
analogue synth..that one offers more variety in sounds than the MB33.
The MB33II is indeed not bad, i used to have the old MB33, and i
liked the sound, but IMO you can create the same kind of 303ish
basses with the AN1x and the filter of the AN1x are (again IMO)
better.
> If I come across one secondhand, I might pick one up.
Check out also the above mentionend Waldorf Pulse...try to get the
Pulse+, that one has Audio-in´s...
It´s a bit more expensive than the MB33, but still around the price
range of $US300.- (s/h).

nonononono :-)))

the ms404 has a great VCF minimoog replica , external input for the filter
and 2 great LFOs that can go in high frequency mode ,u can get nice
FM inharmonic sounds when modulate the VCO, the knobs do send real analogues voltage
changes (nothing better then turning a real pot!)
.. pity they are crappy in quality and misbehave at the extreme of scale
.. I am working on replacing all of them with high quality alps and sfenice ..
a great synth .. much more then a 303 clone which I think the MB33 is.

> You also got Micro Q and Virus then i guess.

not yet :-)) I think I have too much already it is hard enough to
concentrate on the actual gears ..
but I keep my eyes open for some great SH price on both :-)

Well, have an eye open also for a Nord Modular, or Micro Modular. I
recently purchased one and this red thing is sooo flexible. You can
do pretty much EVERYTHING with it, even connecting a coffee-machine
through MIDI and let it brew your coffee;)

Or use it as a filterbox, vocoder, drummachine, sequencer, mixer, and
yes and emulate a NordLead 1, 2 or 3 with it...;))))) Or a MiniMoog,
or a PolyMoog or a Jupiter 8, or a B3 or whatever your heart wants to
play with.

No exageration here - both the Nord Mod and Micor Mod are a lot of
synth for the money. I neraly changed my mind on the spot and bought
the Micrp Mod instead of the MW II I'd gone shopping for ;-) And it
would sit so nicely on the right hand side of the AN1x face plate too!
Right Thomas ;-)

IMO, there are some pro's and con's to the Micro Mod - running it along
side your sequencer environment will require twice as many MIDI In/Out
connections. One pair dedicated for the SysEx editor and another pair
dedicated for MIDI Note and CC events. This means your MIDI Interface/
Patch bay will need to accomodate - could be a hidden cost if your not
already using a 8x8 :-/ Also, depending on your experience, this could
be a headache to set-up and make work reliably. On the plus side, it
will sound great without consuming any CPU resources as a softsynth
equivalent would, i.e., Reaktor or Dynamo. And you wouldn't have to
deal with ASIO drivers and latency issues.

I have a MicroModular (oh, right, I have an expanded ModularKey too...=) ).
I think it's great, but you somewhat trade polyphony for flexibility. Most
patches I create get just one to three voices on the micro, but it's a very
very flexible synth. One moment you use it as a traditional VA, with six
detuned sawtooth osc:s and 24dB lowpass, and the next moment it's a vocoder,
or an advanced FM-synth, or a combination or... =)

Sonically the micro is a bit on the hard/agressive side (although that
depends on the patching-skill of the user, I've heard some very lush and
warm patches), and it complements the rather soft/warm sound of the
PLG150-AN nicely (and therefore, I assume, the an1x).

Also, each Modular will use up two midi-ports. (but then, that's just a good
excuse to get a Midex8... =) )

Just my 2...

/Patrik

Hello,

well I am sure the modular series is very nice but I am sorry
to say I would just HATE to power on PC/WIN/SW/rest of the crap to edit
a synth .. I really like real time interaction with synths ..
but I am impressed with the possibilities and by the nice Software

Regards

True enough, but then again, with a full blown user interface, the
instrument probably would have been quite a bit more expensive than 500
euro...

ACtually, you don´t have to use a PC to use both Modulars. The Micro
Modular is of course limited with editing, but the Nord Modular(key
or rack doesn´t matter) can be edited easily by zillions of knobs and
buttons. Let´s say you have programmed a 6-Osc´s synth with LFO,
Arps, stepsequencer etc. and assigned all knobs properly, then you
can edit sounds on it (900+ sounds saveable...(MM = 99)) without
using the PC. That´s why i love my MM. I upload some Vocoder and
Filter patches, take the little red hot riding box (size of a usual
VHS-Tape) and let´s say my An1x with me on the road, and i am
done...;)

p.s. by the way, i played today in a store with the DX/AN200...the
AN...well that´s my AN1x, nice analogue sounds...the DX...GREAT!
I love it, i have to get one. Instant fun was it to tweak those pling-
plang FM-sounds. That was what i missed about my FS1r...the
spontaneous tweaking. Sure it had four knobs, but still the DX200 is
way much more fun. I hope they will put the FS1r one day in a box
like the DX200...maybe a DX800, together with a better software-
editor...THAT would be cool!
