Gary,

In all your wisdom as a genius midi programmer, I would like to ask your
opinion of KENTONs decision to kill CC7.

I bought my KENTON home, hooked it up, and was pleasantly surprised by the
new life it brought to my PLG150AN. Happily tweaking the filter cutoff and
resonance controls on my Phatboy, I then tweaked the volume knob and
scratched my head for 10 mins trying to figure out why it did nothing ?

Was my Phatboy busted ? no - the vol knob worked on the SW1000XG, so it
must be a KENTON issue. I opened the manual and was absolutely astounded to
read that they filter it out to avoid confusion with thier SYSEX parameter
that controls the volume on thier own mixer.

In the case of the PLG150AN being connected to the SW1000XG, I would imagine
that the PLG itself responds to CC7 or the SW1000XG does by adjusting the
return path volume on the PLG cards output.

So why doesnt the plugstation do the same ? eg - either send the CC7 to the
PLG, or map CC7 to its own mixer. As an end user I dont care which as long
as my volume knobs work.

I'm still having trouble coming to grips with KENTONS logic of this so I
have emailed them but Im also wondering if its me going mad or if you &
other users are in agreement with me.

Hi Paul,

Hmmm...strange indeed!

In practice the PLG150AN does not respond to CC7 (or XG MultiPart volume
sysex for that matter). It is normally the host device that responds to
this command (in the case of the SW1000XG it is its onboard mixer for
the relevant Part audio return signal). If you want to control the real
volume output of the PLG150AN, you should send the sysex command for VCA
Volume!

I think the PlgStation cannot behave similarly to other XG host devices,
since it has no fixed mapping (or logic) between parts/Midi channels and
its on board mixer.....it only knows about PLG slots. Hence the only
solution is to use its mixer sysex command ;-(

I am not entirely sure what it means that the CC7 is filtered? I wonder
whether it actually does get to the PLG board? If it does you could
always use the voice Matrix to map CC7 to VCA volume!

Regards

Gary Gregson

Gary, Kenton have replied to me as you do in stating that the PLG doesnt
have CC7 itself implemented. They discussed with Yamaha and came to the
conclusion that for users sending output back to the SW1000 that
implementing CC7 on the Plugstation would be confusing.

Ive asked for a front panel option allowing this mapping for standalone
users.

Meanwhile, Ill follow up your suggestion and try to find this voice mapping
function you speak of - I assume its in either your program or Yamahas ?

Thanks for the info very much appreciated ! At least its a solution !
