scene morph

2001-10-04 by alciere@midmaine.com

For some odd reason, none of the patches on my An1X have the scene
control assigned to a controller ( I can't morph between scenes). I
pushed both of the scene buttons and get scene controller CC off on
every single patch. A. How did I do that? B. How do I get the scene
control back on?

I did read the manual. It said to use the control matrix. There is no
scene control in the control matrix. There is a scene tune, but the
manual makes no mention of this parameter. It doesn't appear to
affect the scene morph function.

You probably accidentally changed the Scene Control from CC#1 to something
else.

Look on the line of controls just above the keyboard in AN1xEdit for the
setting. You can also find it in the controls of the AN1x, in the same
area where you define the CC#s for the knobs, etc.

Use the Ctrl Device and Ctrl No. parameters under the UTILIT/SETUP menu
to alter MIDI CC assigned to 'SCENE'.

Your confusing the Control Matrix for Utility Control Assign - see page
75 of the manual. You can thank Yamaha for adding these wonderful terms
to our vocabulary ;-)

I love this synth. I made a cool osc sync patch with help from the
AN1X list. Just for fun I set the mod wheel to scene control. The
sound went from a vanilla lead to this hyper distorted wail. Why?
Who knows? I love synthesizers that let you work by trial and error,
without ever needing to know the theory or the math, just twist a few
things and smile.

Now, how do I save the wild and crazy morph sound without losing the
osc sync lead?

AHA!!!
Another undocumented - undiscussed quirk.

Yes indeed, Jimmy, the scenes do interact with one another when you save the
patch as "morphable". Fact. You can try as you might, but if you save
certain patches together (with both scene's LEDs active), it will cause a
change in the sound of one or both.

More specifically, if you have a scene that is for example a square wave
clarinet sound, and another that is a ramp wave horn sound, then you press
both scene buttons together making the patch "morphable"... do either of the
scenes sound different, even though you put the scene controller fully to #1
or #2? My answer is: sometimes. And I can't predict when it will happen.
It seems to happen more when linking 2 scenes with the VCOs on differing
octaves. But I don't like to do this much anyway, since when morphing
between the scenes the pitch of the oscillators changes.

I haven't discovered the reasons behind this quirk, but I will define it as
a lot of Japanese engineering does: It is not a qurik, it is a FEATURE.

Finally, to your question. Page 99 of the manual: Scene Store. Hold Store
and press the Scene 1 or 2 button, depending on where you want to store the
scene. NOTE - Scene Store loads the data into the Scene edit buffer, so you
will need to perform a Voice Store operation to store the Scene parameters
as voice data. Ed's NOTE - remember that you can store the Voice anywhere
you want, overwriting some other Voice you don't use.

Check your filters. Scene morph always uses scene 1's filters and
morph only the cutoff and the resonance. If scene 1 uses a bandpass
filter and scene two uses a band eliminate filter, it just won't
sound right. There are other things that don't morph besides filters.
Check your manual.
