Virus warning (the 'I love you' virus)

Virus warning (the 'I love you' virus)

2000-05-04 by Peter Korsten

Hi lists,

Sorry for crossposting, and sorry that this is a virus warning,
but there's a really nasty e-mail virus messing around. Please note
that this is not a hoax. I wouldn't suggest that you send this to
all your friends, because I expect that you'll receive this message
from other people as well. Mail servers will be overloaded enough
already.

You should be able to recognise the message by the subject line
which contains 'ILOVEYOU' and the attachment 'loveletterforyou.txt'.
However, this is actually a Visual Basic program with the extra
'.vbs' extension, but you mailer will hide this.

I suggest that you inform youself by checking out major news sites.
I just checked and CNN.com didn't carry it yet, but the BCC did:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/hi/english/uk/newsid_736000/736080.stm

You'd also best check out anti-virus companies websites, to download
a repair tool in case you've been infected, or if you fear this
has happened.

The virus is rather nasty - some reports say that it kills JPG and
MP3 files, plus it changes the start page in Internet Explorer, plus
it mails everyone in your address book - possibly mailing lists.

If you must open attachments from MS Outlook,
then save the 8 lines at the end of this message to a file with a .REG
extension, then double click on the file you just created from My
Computer/Windows Explorer. This modifies your registry so that you no
longer execute VB script attachments, just view them harmlessly in a
text
editor. Voila, no more email script viruses.
