Re: [AN1x-list] Digest Number 535

I definatly think the virus has the sonic edge. The nova/supernova are a more produced and polished sound. This is fine too a point but you can't take that glossy smoothness off the sounds. It just can't create the gut renching in your face sounds the virus can. Most of the sounds 've heard from the novas also seem to be simple analogue emulations (albeit good ones). This may be down to the fact that I haven't met anyone who does any programming on them (a complement to the presets). The virus seems to have a bigger sound pallette. Comes down to your desision at the end but I just prefer the virus. If I only could have one piece of kit I might look at the novas, but I still doubt I'd go for it.

Yes I agree..... I especially like the Supernova interface compared to the Virus.

But, the Virus has such a sound to it.... I can't really explain it, but it has amazing sonic capabilities. :-)

Well, i think it's bit that jp8000/an1x debate...it's all a matter of tast if you like the nova or the virus better. BUT since this is an an1x list we shoudl ask ouselves: which is the best companion to the an1x? If I had the jp8000 (warm, polished) i think the virus would have been the best companion with it's diverse sonic palette. For the an1x (upfront, wide spectrum) the nova makes a great machine for fatter, warmer more polished sounds to back the an1x with. At least that's how I see it.

Hm, i think the RS7000 with it´s sampled sounds get along well with
the AN1x, as well as the XBase09 and the FS1r. I ordered a Clavia
MicroModular today, so i hope this one will go along as well. What do
you think?

I also had a Korg Electribe R, and really this one did not go so well
sonically with the AN1x, in my ears. But as Bas(s)tiaan :) already
said, a matter of taste.
The interface of the ER1 was superb. I never used the manual.

You have chosen wisely.

I think everyone should invest in at least (and probably at most as well)
one sampler or sample player. There are some sounds that you can only
reproduce by samples.

I've been thinking what to add, as soon as I have the money (which is
probably somewhere in the late 23rd century). The AN1x was the starter
machine, and given the wider availibility of VA synths nowadays, I might
have ended up with something different. Nevertheless, I haven't regretted
buying the AN1x for a moment, even when they got almost 50% cheaper at the
end.

Basically, it would be another VA synth, and a sampler or something like a
K2600XS. But, like I said, money is the issue, and with a wedding and a
honeymoon coming on...

Yeah I agree on that one...I just compared the virus or the nova as companion to the yamaha... I think you might wanna look at a non-yamaha rompler tho. I own the cs2x and MANY of it's sounds are sampled from the an1x and the fx etc. sound very same-ish.

Take a look at something from Korg or Roland. Maybe even something totally different: fm or wavetable?

I wouldn't mind an FS1r, because it offers a lot of interesting sounds and
possibilities. I'm not really into the weirder kinds of synthesis: for
instance, I decided not to buy a K5000S, although I'll probably regret it,
and not regret it, for the rest of my life.

I'm interested in nice sounds and what can be accomplished with them. That
means: an excellent VA synth like a Virus or a Supernova, and a sampler with
a very good piano sound (because a real piano is way too expensive and big).

The whole lot I would want to throw into a surround mix, and see what can be
done with that.

Hi Peter,

Having just picked up a second-hand K5000S, I must say I'm delighted by it.
It was a toss up between the K5000S or the AN1x a couple of years ago, and
at the time I went with the AN1x. The AN1x is possibly more versatile, but
the K5000S absolutely excels in producing pads. It also has a superb
keyboard action, thoughtfully laid out LARGE LCD, and the best styling this
side of the... er, AN1x.

Nest stop, the FS1r!

Ah, but I had to buy a ticket to Malta (not cheap, let me tell you) and move
all of my stuff to the same address. Ever wondered what it costs to move an
AN1x and friends (and believe me, the EX5 has a BIG box) 2000 km southwards?

Man, this is becoming silly. :)

At the moment, I think my cat spends more time with the AN1x than I do. I'll
see if I can scan a few photos (cat scan?) and put them on the internet.

I had the AN1x for quite a while, when I spotted a brand new (I never buy
second-hand) K5000S in a shop, for a little over 1000 euro.

I played with it, and decided that it wasn't the synth for me - especially
not for that amount of money - because I'm definitely not into complicated
programming. Nowadays, I have an EX5, which is silver, good-looking, with a
large LCD and excellent keyboard. Pads and strings are to die for. I'll get
over the K5000S, no doubt.

In that same shop, I also decided to pass on the Ensoniq Fizmo. Very
uninteresting machine with a stupid name.

Actually, I'm probably getting a little out-of-control even considering
another synth as I've still got much potential in my present setup, but
thanks for pointing out the TG77. You're right, it does appear to offer some
unexplored sound possibilities.

Cheers,

I had a FS1r and i sold it. If you are not into complicated
programming, forget the FS1r and rather get a DX200, if you want FM.

The sound of the FS1r is most definately outstanding. Simply
excellent. Some arp-sounds are even more fat from what i ´ve heard
coming out of the AN1x. But the interface, sorry my language, is
shit. If Yamaha ever will make a table-top or keyboard version of the
FS1r with lots of knobs and sliders...i most definately would buy it,
otherwise, if you are not into complicated programming (we are
talking about 3000+ parameters (8 FM-operators plus Formant-
synthesis) on the FS1r with only 4 knobs and 11 buttons...the whole
thing in a MU100r case)
The software editors that are out there are, compared with the AN1x-
edit...a big joke. You don´t even have full control over the formant-
synthesis.

But still the soundquality of the 1200+ preset voices are
outstanding, and you can feed it with DX7 presets.

AN1X-edit is a good program but then the AN1X is a less complex synth.

Both the user community FS1R editor and the free OEM Sounddiver are
quite capable editors. Sounddiver does offer control over individual
formants but does not include formant analysis software to create
new formant sequences (sequences of formants which can create
artificial speech such as the "Ladies and Gentlemen may I have your
attention please" FS1R catch phrase). Yamaha has such s/w but for
some reason refuses to release it or augment the existing library of
fseqs.

But this is straying way off topic. It may be interesting to note
that there is a dedicated and active FS1R group at

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/fs1r

Now back to the AN1X ...

Maybe they are preparing a new synth with FM and a software editor.
Who knows. I say, give the FS1r more knobs and a good editor and
you´ll be done.

Well, the chimp evens out. :) He´s a cutey.

Thanks for sharing. I like that silver EX5S, matches real nice with
the AN1x blue.
Btw. i´ve heard that Yamaha overpainted the metallic case of the AN1x

the CS1x had a plastic case and the AN1x too.
Shouldn´t it then be possible to rub the color off and paint the AN1x

Also, is there a plastic dust cover available for the AN1x? Anything
recommandable?

You don't want to know how many soft toys I have... about 30 or 40.

I've had the EX5R before and it's in *exactly* the same colours as the AN1x.
So if you're looking for a nice complement, the original isn't a bad choice
either.

Eh, didn't you have both?

Call me stupid, but the case of the AN1x feels like plastic to me, at least
the top part. The bottom is metal and black.

I wouldn't repaint the AN1x: the instrument becomes completely
incomprehendable without the transfers.

I would go for a generic 61-key keyboard cover.

Hm, i guess then i missunderstood something then, i´ve read someplace
that it has some kind of plastic paint put on a metallic case, but i
guess in this case it would be much more heavier.

True, but let me try first Jim´s "rain-camping-poncho" idea.

Ok, i gotta go and play with my new toy...NMM
