RE: [AN1x-list] Aftertouch?

RE: [AN1x-list] Aftertouch?

So far, I think there's been no further discussion on this problem. Yamaha
failed to include an aftertouch sensitivity in the global configuration,
therefore it spews out a lot of aftertouch data way to early (imho) for the
average keyboardist. A schematic would be very handy in this case, because
I'm afraid that the only (simple) solution is to add a resistor in series
with the aftertouch strip. Otherwise, you'll have to adjust the aftertouch
sensitivity on all of your outboard gear, which in reality is the simplest
solution.

RE: [AN1x-list] Aftertouch?

Only internally on the sound engine will any adjustment (afaik) to the
aftertouch parameters work. Out the midi port the aftertouch data always
seems to have the same sensitivity. (At least as far as I've found. The AN
has some cross-sensitive parameters that can step on each other, so I may
not have discovered the secret here yet.)

I'd recently posted an article from Transoniq Hacker on my site
regarding the ASR-X and it's poor response to massive amounts of
simultaneous MIDI controller data. In the article - by Craig Anderton -
mentions a company named Pavo. Apparently Pavo makes an assortment
of unusual MIDI controllers and filters which would permit you to thin
out the AN1x Aftertouch MIDI CC while on it's signal is routed to your
MIDI sound module. the URL is http://www.pavo.com I believe Anatek and
some other company (whose name I don't recall) also made MIDI Filter
type devices for thinning out controller data. They were relatively
inexpensive to begin with and can probably be had on the 2nd market if
they are no longer manufactured.

Jon

Re: [AN1x-list] Aftertouch?

Hi PolHarri,
I'm not an expert since I'm also new in AN1x stuff and I also had this doubt, but I can help you out.
You're right about how the AT works. The AN1x will respond at it as you programmed (using and changing the selected parameter) when you press the keyboard harder.
You can turn it on using the control matrix (select "AT" as source) and the parameter it will respond (select the one you want as "parameter" at the control matrix).
I didn't noticed any patch w/ AT...but I don't know them all...:-)
I hope it helps (at least a little),
PinheadX.

Hi everyone. New AN1x owner and new to this list. I have a question for the experts here.
What's the story on AN1x's aftertouch capability?
As this is my first keyboard with aftertouch, still not 100% sure how it works. Is the keyboard supposed to "give" a bit when ytou press hard? I haven't found any evidence of that. Any comments on how you guys use this feature out there?
Any patches with aftertouch set up already that anyone recommends looking at?
Thanks,
PolHarris

It has aftertouch, now i don't know the actual true meaning of
aftertouch in the sense of the developers/engineers who invented and
implemented these kind of things, however i can also admit that i
haven't discovered it's use so far either ... :]
You can set aftertough to activate certain parameters using the Ctrl
Matrix (the grey blocks on the right on the an1x) but i haven't had any
results in setting something up that effects it in an obvious way,
although i'll admit that i'm probably doing something wrong :) like
"being in the wrong range of things (settings and depths).

Hope this helped a bit though ....

By the way, how about an After Touch patch creation theme for the rest of

I agree w/ you....it's funny, but somehow useless since we have many ways to
change and "morph" the sound's parameters and fx.
I think we're wrong...:-)

I see, to be honest I found one when I read the AT patch creation...it
should be cool if I have the skills to program (wich I doubt...at least by
now, since I got it less then a month ago)
I'll try anyway and post for you to improve..:-)

RE: [AN1x-list] Aftertouch?

I've addressed the aftertouch issue here before, with the comment that the
aftertouch function is too sensetive on the AN1x. (but that's another issue)
Try using the control matrix to open up the filter using aftertouch, or
increasing lfo depth, panning depth, feedback, etc. It's another real-time
control that's very common in modern synths and most keyboards can make good
use of it.

Yes, I agree! It's almost ridiculous how sensitive it is. It is almost
impossible to use the AN1x to control other synths because of it's sensitivity.
Does anyone know if there is a setting so that the AN1x does not send
aftertouch to midi out?

Thanks,

Sayer

Gotta be at the keyboard to try this... maybe in the utilities matrix it can
be disabled. Will try tonight.

I haven't had a moment to install the new ROM either. I'm sorry and will
keep the list posted when I do.

Preset #99 'Soundtrack'
Preset #102 'Morphyum'
Preset #104 'Vangelizm'

Admitted, there aren't that many presets that use aftertouch, but perhaps
there are some more that these - I didn't really check. I thought that #110
'Jack' had it as well, but all of a sudden it doesn't. Hmm.

I don't think that aftertouch is too sensitive, actually. You don't have
much to work with, since you have to press the key down past the 'end', so
to say. I think it's more in the nature of aftertouch. Anyway, I don't have
much problems with it.

Er, these are factory presets. Unless you have another version than my 1.02,
you might want to see what a factory reset does.

Except destroying all of your patches, naturally. :)

You're sure your AN1x doesn't have a 49 key keyboard, and many knobs and
sliders? :)

Only if you bought an unsed AN....Try the factory presets..:-)
But the #99 preset is "Magic" rather then "Soundtrack"...

BTW, I'm also don't think that its AT is too sensitive, just try to not
spank your keyboard...:-)

Twin sets of Factory Presets

2000-08-16 by Phil

Hi Guys,

Just to clarify, the AN1x had different presets made up for the European market.
Once I discovered this it made me curious to know what presets I had in Australia. I seem to have the ones listed as:

Show quoted textHide quoted text
'Morpyum' or 'Vangelizm'

Could someone please confirm which country they origin from?

Many thanks,

Phil

(Incidently, the European presets are reportedly very good, and also, both sets are available for download somewhere on the net)

RE: [AN1x-list] Aftertouch?

2000-08-16 by Edwards, Ed

Well, I tried to disable AT from MIDI out, but Yamaha didn't provide this.
Actually, most synths never have the option to disable any of their "main"
knobs from sending on MIDI out (pitch bend, mod wheel, AT, hold pedal, etc.)

The difference between what Sayer and I are complaining about and what goes
on internally in the AN1x are 2 different functions. In the AN1x itself,
you can adjust the amount of modulation that aftertouch produces via the
modulation matrix. But in the MIDI stream, when controlling another synth,
the AT messages come too soon (very light pressure sends AT messages) and
trigger external responses. Don't tell me I spank my keyboard too hard!
Yamaha didn't put in the software an Aftertouch Sensitivity adjust parameter
like almost everybody else does.

(Still haven't installed that ROM. Will do tonight, and also investigate if
putting a resistor in series with the aftertouch strip helps this
sensitivity issue.)

AFAIK they come from UK, the whole patch-set is called "London" and
should be in the filesection of www.egroups.com (folder "Patches from

Hm, i never dealt with AT and MIDI but isn´t it possible to simply
filter AT out with a sequencer or a virtual MIDI-device like
Hubi´s
Loopback or MIDI-Ox?

Yeah, I couldn't find it either... Thanks for checking. :-)

I do spank my keyboard, because it likes it, but please don't tell anybody!

I can filter in Cakewalk... It's just one more thing to remember. Actually I
hardly use the keys on the AN1x anymore since I got my QS+ fixed, but it sure
was a pain when I was relying on the AN1x as a controller....
