An1x

2000-05-02 by Grant Davies

Hi, I just joined the list yesteday and am happy to see a list with some activity. We use an AN1x in our studio for our TV work, and do love it. I think it gets used in every piece we right, and is just one of those boards that has the right sound for the job.

Unfortunately we have never successfully backed up and restored the An1x. I spent a couple of hours yesterday trying to get it to work.

Using cakewalk's sysex window, I dumped one patch from the an1x, worked fine. I then sent the patch back to an1x and I got an error of "Incorrect size" on the An1x screen. So I edited the ttseq.ini file in cakewalk to slow down the data transfer. This damn the An1x took the patch dump fine, but when you try to play the an1x, its mute.. does nothing, you can change patches but its absolutely mute, and local was ON.

I turn it on and off, and it comes back, but the patch of course is not saved.

To work around this, I did it again, and even though the an1x was mute, I went ahead and stored the patch, turned the an1x on and off and sure enough the patch had sucessfully been dumped back and stored.

Ok, next I try to dump the whole keyboard. First using sysex window in cakewalk. It computer stores the dump fine. When I try to send it back to the An1x, it says "recieving midi dump" but when the computer has finished, the An1x still says "receiving midi dump" and never comes back.

I tried recording the sysex dump from the an1x to a midi track instead at 80bpm. The data dumped fine, but when I set it back to the an1x, it would say "receiving midi dump" and then say "recieved" within a second even though there was another minute or so left of sysex data to dump!

I'm using Cakewalk pro 9.0 I can dump the Prophecy, cs1x, K4 and Nord Lead, and JV1080 perfectly fine. Its just the An1x giving me hell.

Sorry for the long post, but we are really in trouble if we loose all these patches we have tweaked or created.

Thanks

Grant,
Have you tried using the AN1x editor? Its sysex is fully compatible
with the AN, and has never hiccuped on my machine. As for Cakewalk and
sysex.... I had to unload v9.0 from my laptop, since it brought it to its
knees. Less problems with v6.0, but I still don't trust it fully for sysex.
(Very nice sequencer, though.) Try MIDIOX (freeware) for sysex if you
insist on sysex. Your problems may be due to requests of handshakes from
the AN or needing some of the global info to be sent with the patch...dunno.
But the editor, being developed specifically for the AN, handles backups
completely (which includes the user sequences, free envelope generator,
etc.).

well, for sysex dumping storing and editting why dont you use AN1-edit? It´s a free download. I´ve eard before about some dumping problems with the an1x, but with an1x edit it will tell you wehen thing go wrong so you have to do em over.. At least you wont find out about it afterwards.

I agree with the others that the AN1x editor is the way to go and it's free!
There seems to be a problem with the AN1x not handling sysex data fast enough
when a dump is received. Other recent Yamaha synths are known for the same
problem (EX series).

Grant your name is very familiar to me. We have crossed paths (at least emails)
at some point along the way, I just don't remember when. So, a big "HI" to you!

2000-05-02 by Roland van Oorschot

Hi Grant!

Like the others I prefer An1Xedit for dumping patches etc.
But if you still want to use Cakewalk for it read this:

(from: http://www.cakewalk.com/Support/Docs/Sysx.htm)
TTSSEQ.INI Parameters
Adding a Line to the TTSSEQ.INI File
You can modify the [Options] section of the TTSSEQ.INI file from the Windows Notepad, or from the Settings | Initialization Files section in Cakewalk. Every time you add or change a line in TTSSEQ.INI, you have to restart Cakewalk for the change to take effect.
SYSXDelayAfterF7=n
This setting causes Cakewalk to delay SYSX transmission for a certain amount of time if it encounters an F7 in a System Exclusive bank. This gives some instruments a required amount of "breathing" time which is necessary to process the SYSX transmission. The default delay is 1/18 of a second, but can be changed by also adding the SysxSendDelayMsecs=n line.
n = 0 no delay
n = 1 delay between each SYSX string
This line was introduced in Cakewalk Professional for Windows version 2.01 and Cakewalk 5.0 for DOS. (Please note that there is no fix for Cakewalk 4.0 or earlier for DOS users, or for Cakewalk Pro for Windows v1.0 users.)
SysxSendPacketSize=n
System Exclusive bytes are transmitted in packets, with a 1/18 second delay between each packet. Setting this value smaller will help slower synthesizers avoid overflowing their internal buffers. This line sets the number of bytes between each SYSX transmit delay.
n = 1024 Default value (in bytes)
SysxSendDelayMsecs=n
This setting causes Cakewalk to delay <n> milliseconds if it encounters an F7 in a System Exclusive bank.
n = 60 Default value (in milliseconds)
SysxReceiveBuffers=n
When Cakewalk receives SYSX messages, it needs to set up buffers ahead of time, since the messages can be very fast and long. This line sets the number of buffers.
n = 128 Default value
SysxReceiveBuffersSize=n
This line sets the size to allocate to each SYSX receive buffer.
n = 512 Default value (in bytes)
You don't normally need to have the total buffer space be as large as the largest SYSX message you want to receive, because during SYSX receive, Cakewalk processes each buffer, saving its data and recycling the buffer for further use. But if you have a slower PC and the message arrives very fast, there may be no time to empty and recycle buffers, so you would have to set up enough space in advance for the whole message. Note that you may not have enough available system memory in your machine to actually allocate all the buffers you request.
Also note one final detail: A long SYSX message is often composed of many little SYSX messages, each starting with F0 and ending with F7. MME drivers, in order to promptly return completed SYSX messages, stop filling the current buffer when an F7 arrives and move on to the next buffer. This is why it is better to use many, smaller buffers rather than fewer, larger ones.

Sayer, I think you either bought a EMU ESI32 off me.. or you were going to... I can't remember... nice to cross paths again!
To everyone else on the list (so this is not soo off topic!) I'm working on our web site at the moment, but by June 1st I should have our video and music uploaded and the website semi-functional. When I do I'll post to the list so you guys can see and hear how we use the An1x in our stuff.
Cheers

Hi Grant

I would recommend using AN1xEdit (but then I would...since I wrote it :-).
Get it from my URL shown below.

If you are using Cakewalk then you need to tweak the TTSSEQ.INI parameters.
In particular you need to ensure there is at least 100ms between bulk
packets and that receive buffers are at least 1024bytes in length (some AN
sysex messages are longer than 512bytes). Try:-

SysxSendPacketSize=1024
SysxSendDelayMsecs=100
SysxReceiveBuffersSize=1024

Re: [AN1x-list] An1x

2000-05-02 by Grant Davies

We actually do use AN1x edit for all our patch editing.. we just like to backup incakewalk as we can put the sysex banks to auto send so the An1x gets programmed with the correct patches as soon as the file is loaded...
Thanks for the TTSEQ settings, I was messing with them at the weekend, but after I reduced the delay between packets I did reduce the buffer sizes too and that probably what goofed it all up.
Thanks again, what a great welcome to the list.
Cheers
Grant

Roland,
Nice to have you aboard! Sorry but I never finished emailing ex-Teklab
list members to let you know of the new list :-( More and more of the
'old' faces are turning up!

Anyway, the Files section here at eGroup's has a number of folders we've
put together for Voices, Documentation, Cakewalk stuff, Windows and Mac stuff.

This post would make a terrific addition to the Cakewalk or
Documentation folder along with Gary's (Hi Gary - nice to hear from you
too!) addendum.

We didn't disable the 'attachments allowed' option but we discussed last
month and more people disliked attachments than liked them so we just
create folders in the Files section. Here's the URL:

http://www.egroups.com/files/AN1x-list

There's been a steady stream of new voices and more on the way ;-)
There's a Links section as well the occasional Poll - just for fun!

Regards,
Jon
