Yes...Use An1xEdit!

I am not sure what you mean by the AN-EXPERT PC software (do you mean
the original Yamaha Macintosh Editor?). However if it was designed for
the An1x, then it is unlikely to be totally compatible with the
PLG150AN.

Both devices use the same sysex addresses for editing the EDIT buffer of
the card (i.e. auditioning the sound whilst you tweak). Hence you may be
able to tweak voices OK. However the PLG150AN and the AN1x have
different sysex addresses for user sound bank memory. Hence if the
AN-EXPERT PC software is designed to operate with the AN1x, it is
unlikely to work with the PLG150AN.

As far as I know, only An1xEdit correctly supports both devices!

Hello Loud, Sod AN expert if you can't figure it out, use AN-Edit
instead, and use the 'Send' button! As for the smart media, I'm not
sure.

But AN-edit will definitely do the Job, no problem and it's free.
Failing that you need to send a sysex string to the card, that tells it
to store the current edit buffer or voice to a program number on the
card.

Hold on, I'll look through the manual and see if I can find it.

Well, it would appear that the instructions for storing the voice to
smart media are in the CS6x manual.

And as for the PLG pdf, there is no info in there apart from the above,
maybe it's a question for Gary G.?

Quite odd though, I can't work out the sysex from AN-edit, but I am
assuming that a bulk scene dump is being done.

I can't find the status byte!

An1xEdit uses Voice Bulk dump and SEQ bulk dump for storing data to the
AN device user bank memory. These are the only bulk dump messages that
can alter the user memory. All other bulk dumps (Common, scene, Ctrl,
Step SEQ etc) address the edit buffer of the device....and are thus not
stored to the user bank.

The PLG PDF manual states that the PLG responds to AN1x Voice bulk
dump...however, in my experience it does not (Yamaha may have fixed this
on later revisions of the PLGAN card....but on the one I have, it
doesn't work)! The PLG does respond to AN1x current voice (edit buffer)
sysex, since the An1x and PLG cards use the same addresses for these
dumps. However the addresses for user bank voice/seq are different!

An1x: 11 nn 00
PLG: 20 nn 00

Furthermore there are several parameters that must be tweaked when
swapping sysex data between the AN1x and PLG150AN to accommodate the
different parameter sets of the devices. Neither device performs these
tweaks automatically.

Fortunately, An1xEdit sorts this entire mess out for you. Just select
the appropriate device mode and away you go!

I knew it was a dump message, but in midiox the message starts 00 01 00
01, not with the usual F0 or E0? So it was hard to find which message it
was sending. I'm glad you cleared that up I will remember that now.

You could always do what I did: just sell the shit, get rid of it. I had
a CS6x with a PLG150AN and a PLG150PF card. What a friggin' headache.
That's got to be one of poorest operating system and user interface designs
I've ever encountered. Totally non-intuitive and non-musician-friendly.
And I'm not a chimp, either - I am literate about synthesizers and
computers. I've been dealing with midi synths for almost 20 years, and I
also work as a computer programmer. I finally realized that I was wasting
my time on that shit, and needlessly frustrating myself. I did myself a
favour and got rid of the whole thing. From now one, some of my primary
rules are: 1) never buy a synth that needs expansion cards - if you're not
happy using it without expansions, don't buy it 2) avoid expansion cards
- proceed with extreme caution 3) proceed with extreme caution where
Yamaha synths are concerned 4) make user-friendly operating system a
higher priority when buying synths.

Huh? Sysex messages never start with E0...that's pitch bend! It is
possible to get a sysex continuation message (F7) ...but it's rarely
used with modern systems.

The message for the AN1x should start: F0 43 00 5C 0F 16 11
For the PLG150AN the message should start: F0 43 00 5C 0E 28 20

If MIDIOX is showing something different on your system, then you have a
configuration problem in MIDIOX or whatever you are using as a pipe
driver between An1xEdit and MIDIOX....in other words you are losing
data!!!!

BRAVO! Good for you. There's an attitude I can respect - no fooling :-
) I owned a Korg Wavestation for years. Loved the sound :-) hated
programming it :-# Consequently, I was never able to exploit the
machine the way it was intended :-(

In regards to the AN1x, ever notice how many comments in the online
reviews detract from the Assign Knob/Function button design? I find
this an effective mechanism to navigate - and the matrix works for me
too (if only the select knob were replaced by a column of buttons as
on the A3000.) But I imagine if the user is not already experienced
with your typical subtractive synth layout that this can be confusing.

regards,

Jon

p.s. - Are you lobbying to replace velocity-switching with crossfade
switching or another mechanism?

That's why I put a question mark by it, I wasn't sure because the whole
string is missing in Midiox, I get around 490bytes of 00 01 then a load
of other data after it.

Haven't decided yet. I have several other synths, but I was looking for a
good synth to use an an "all-in-one" gigging synth that would have
excellent quality versions of all the basic sounds I need (ac. pno, rhodes,
wurlitzer, B3, strings, pads, analog synth sounds, etc.

I could have gone with the S80, but I didn't want to go above 40 lbs in
weight.

I could have gone with a Triton Pro, but I don't think the user interface
is designed very well for live performing, at least not for me.

For me, the best system I have yet used is my combination of a Roland A-50
controller plus a rack with several synth modules. But it's not perfect -
I don't like carrying the rack around to gigs, the A-50 user interface is
good but could be better. Etc., etc.

It looks like I'm never going to find what I'm looking for, so I'm
considering abandoning the search. I may just buy a Korg CX-3, and gig
with my P80 piano and the CX3.

Hi Folks,

I'm new to the list. I just purchased a PLG150AN board for my CS6x
and was looking through the thread that follows this message for some
info before I installed the board and started fooling around with it.

If interested, I came across the following link to a Yamaha PDF which
explains how to use the CS6X with the AN plug-in board:
http://www.yamahasynth.com/d_pro/d_plg150/plg150an.pdf

I also added a new folder in the bookmarks section with the link.

Great resource you have here.

Best,
