OT- production question $$?

OT- production question $$?

2001-07-15 by ELEKTRO DAN

sorry for being off topic but i know there must be many producers on
this list and i thought you might be able to answer a few questions.

In my past i've been ripped off many times because of my lack of
knowledge in areas i did not have much knowledge in.

I just want to know for the average "ok" song in the following
categorys, how much money should i ask for or be given?

hard tekno (tek house, progressive house) ??

tekno ??

house (disco, jazzy, funky) ??

drum & bass (jungle)??

also, do producers care how long a song is? i think 5 min. is average
is that the case?

i hope someone can give me knowledge in this area because it's very
important.

thanks,

elektro dan.

Hmmmmn, Hard question this, But from My own personal experience, I'd
expect a pretty crap contract, to start off with.

We got a contract for 1 record last summer, they released it in October,
we got a £250 advance between 3 of us. We will just about break even on
the Vinyl that they pressed up for the EP (1423 copies sold to date).

After all monies have been recouped for the vinyl we are supposed to get
50% of the profit (Which is going to amount to Zilch!)

BUT that all sounds like a bad deal for the tune that they have of ours,
but it's not as bad as it sounds.

For a start we knew what we were getting into, we read the contract and
had it looked over and it's a standard contract, nothing out of order.

Secondly, The label we signed to is Cooking Records (Part of GLR
Records, which is run by LTJ BUKEM, who has a reasonable customer Base
and they deal with both of the styles of music that we to make (Downbeat
and Drum & Bass.))

Thirdly, Our single has just been released on an album (Last week) which
means we should get around £5000 between the 3 of us, So the contract
started out pretty Crap, but the strength of the Tune itself has carried
it further and now our contract is better.

So, for me the contract was good, We got signed to a label that we knew
well and that was the main reason for signing, Being associated with
this company, not the money, they now want more tunes from us and they
are prepared to push us further, which makes me feel that it was worth
the risk of the seemingly crap contract!

The other thing about this is that it was the 1st record that I have
tried to sell, So, I guess I got very lucky in the fact that the first
company we approached with it gave us a contract :¬)
