Re:Outputs

Re:Outputs

2001-07-14 by Yutaka Nakamura

Hi,

I have a similar problem on my AN1x, but in my case, it is distortion on
outputs. Since the headphone outs sound fine, I don't think it is my
patches being too loud (assuming that it is not distorted at D/A stage). I
remember it was working fine before, so this problem started at some point.
So I have been using Y cable from phone out for a several months now (I have
forgotten that I have been doing this!).

Jon, you have mentioned "pops and clicks" at start up - I do have that
problem. I bought this unit from SamAsh for $500, but I don't know if it
was new, or a factory refurb, and I never had it serviced. Is what I am
experiencing the "old problem" you have mentioned??

Thanks,

-Yutaka

Annoying Silence....

2001-07-14 by Froz

Just wondering if anyone else suffers from the same problem with their
SW1000. More often than not if I've been doing other stuff on my computer
and then decide to get into music mode, my SW1000 is completely silent. A
swift reboot always does the trick but it's annoying all the same.

My PC is homemade with the following:-

PIII-1000
512MB RAM
SW1000XG
PLG-150 addon
3 x 30GB drives UDMA 100
SB Live
NVIDIA GEFORCE DDR Graphics Card
WIN98

I have had the SW1000 for a couple of years and the PLG card for only a
year. The silence was there before the PLG card was fitted, and at that
time I had a different PC. The only common thing that has stayed after the
new PC is the SB Live, and the silence :)

Okay, so more than one user has this problem so it's definitely not
an isolated incident. We still don't know if it's related to
the 'pops & clicks' problem or not (does that even matter, really?)

Yes, I believe so. My AN1x exhibited the problem from day one. I knew
from various user groups that other owners had the same problem. When
I called Yamaha they readily acknowledged the problem and corrected
it with a hardware repair at their facility in CA (I'm on the East
Coast, btw.) Yamaha was great - very helpful. My old dealer (now out
of business) from whom I bought the AN1x was a MAJOR headache.

Outputs

2003-11-18 by alien1x

Hello,
I have a question about the An1x output?Is the mono L/R output
balanced or unbalanced?

Regards
Alien

Hi,

The spec doesn't say, but I'm pretty sure that they are unbalanced. Usually, manufacturers mention balanced outputs by name. Also, I don't feel a second click when plugging cables in.

Hello,

Thanks for the info. The reason I was asking was that I wanted the
best cable and connection going into my new makie 1402.

You Mackie has more than enough gain to accomodate the AN1x and handles Bal and
Unbal connections equally well. I wouldn't worry about it.

First post, hi All =]

I'm 99% sure they're unbalanced. Alternatively, you could try both
balanced and unbalanced cables (you always should have some extra
laying around) and see if you hear any significant improvement.

I've cabled mine with unbalanced Hosa cables 20 feet long (not a
recommended practice!) and haven't had any problems so far. Just keep
your cables as short as practical and don't run them near things like
big power supplies, luminiscent lights, refrigerators, bug zappers,
arc welders, etc.. Avoid close proximity to power and speaker cables,
or at least cross them at a right angle. Unbalanced wiring is not
quite as bad or inferior to balanced as people tend to portray it.
Just follow those simple rules and you should be ok.

Also, a decent power conditioner (like a Furman PL8 or PL-PLUS) will
make quite a difference and is well worth it. Get one if you haven't
already and power all your audio gear from it (use power strips if
you need more plugs, put all wall-wart power supplies on a separate
strip and keep it away from everything else).

Cheers,
Alex
