tweaking knobs in AN1x edit crashes my pc!! why God????? why???

2001-04-24 by i don't have one!

i was making some new sounds on my plg150an using AN1x edit and i had
made some new drum&bass sounds. i spent hours tweaking and adjusting
till these sounds were just right and as i was testing out these
sounds my computer screen went black and it (the computer)
re-started!! these sounds are now lost forever!! oh s%@t, i said
aloud!!
i have been noticing that this has been happening to me alot latley.
but only with certian sounds.
these sounds are heavily distorted, alot of filter modulation and
renosance. lots of feedback to!!.
some of the sounds are just the filter self oscillating with bizzare
modulation. i also used my pitch bend wheel to control the VCF mod
depth and went nuts till my ears bleed and i was seeing sound waves!!

it couldn't have been excessive vibration from the sounds that caused
my computer to shutdown because i was wearing earphones.
the bass would have blown my tannoy's!!! wholy RMS!!!!

my PC's not that bad either, it's less than a year old,
pentium 3, 933MHz, 256MB RAM, 7200rpm IDE, running windows 98se.

the second time it crashed like this ,this evening, i got a message on
a blue screen titled "WINDOWS" as follows>............

"(an exception 0d has occured at 0028:00010004 in vxd---.
this was called from 0028:c15d0430 in vxd---.
it may be possible to continue normally.)"
press ctrl-alt -del to blah, blah, blah, and so on.

but it was not possible to continue normally!.
more sounds lost to the machine!!.
mabye this is God's way of making me sleep at night???
"mabye if his computer crashes he'll giveup and go to sleep tonight??"

anyway, what i would like to know is that has this happened to anyone
else and how can i make it go away????

THANKS in advance,,,

Hi Elektro

This looks like a driver/interrupt conflict on your machine. Basically the
vxd referenced in the crash dump is the driver that is having the problem.
You don't provide the exact dump message so I can't say for certain if it is
the SW1000XG driver (vswxgdsp.vxd)causing the problem?

However you best approach to the solving the problem is:

a) First ensure you have the latest drivers for the SW1K card from the
Yamaha support site:
http://www.xgfactory.com

b) If the latest drivers do not cure the problem, check in Device Manager
whether the SW1K is sharing interrupts with another card. If so attempt to
reconfigure the interrupt usage so that the SW1K gets its own interrupt.

c) If Win98SE is operating in ACPI mode, you may not be able to reconfigure
interrupts directly. In that case, you may want to try rearranging the PCI
cards in your machine.

You might want to try getting into the habit of saving your voice every 1/2
hour or so. That way, if you get a crash, you've only lost half an hour's
work. This is a good approach in general with computers.

Once you get over your computer problem, would you mind sharing your drum n
bass sounds with the list? :)

i went into the device manager and checked
everything. they all said device is working properly.
but my video card and the sw1000xg are both using
interrupt request 11. i have the latest drivers for
the sw1000xg. i don't know if i am running in ACPI
mode. how do yo know if your in that mode?
i don't know how to change IRQ's. is it easy or should
i take my machine to a pro?

anyway, thanks for taking a look at my question.

Open control panel, system, then click on the device manager tab, then
click the '+' next to system devices, if you see a reference to ACPI
then you are using it, if you don't then you are not.

It can be bugger, I'd wait and see what other advice turns up first
before I handed cash over.

If you are still not having any joy, then I can give you some info on
how to get rid of ACPI under windows 98, There are 2 methods, one works,
but requires a flat reinstall and the other is a registry setting that
is easy to do, but hasn't worked for me yet!

i took a look in device manager>computer
properties>view resources and the IRQ's are as
follows...

SETTING......HARDWARE USING THE SETTING..............
00 system timer
01 standard 101/102 key or microsoft natural keyboard
02 programmable interrupt controler
03 communications port (com2)
04 communications port (com1)
05 acpi irq holder for pci irq steering
05 via teck pci to usb universal host controller
06 standard floppy disc controller
07 epson printer port (lpt1)
08 system cmos/realtime clock
09 acpi irq holder for pci irq steering
09 via pci audio controller(wdm)
09 sci irq used by acpi bus
10 d-link de2200isa pnp lan adapter
11 acpi irq holder for pci irq steering
11 acpi irq holder for pci irq steering
11 yamaha sw1000xg sound system
11 magnum/xpert 128/xpert99(english)
12 microsofr ps12 port mouse
13 numeric data processor
14 via bus master pci ide controller
14 primary ide controller (dual fifo)
15 via bus master pci ide controller
15 secondary ide controller (dual fifo)

as you can see irq 5 is used 2 times, irq 9 is 3
times, irq 11 is 4 times, irq 14 and 15 are 2 times.
some items are repeated more than once like the
"acpi irq holder for pci irq steering".

are these settings serously wrong? are there only 15
irq's for these item's to use?
what can i do to fix this problem??

by the way, thanks.

RE: [AN1x-list] tweaking knobs in AN1x edit crashes my pc!! why God????? why???

2001-04-25 by Grant Davies

PC's have only 15 irqs... with the advent of win98 PC's can share IRQ's and
most motherboards support the sharing of IRQS... what you don;t want is
MAJOR devices sharing the SAME IRQ like a video card and a hard disk
controller... or an audio card and a video card...

I found the best way with win98 and windows 2000 is to tell your BIOS you
have a PNP OS and let windows duke it out. As long as you have pretty
standard hardware with decent drivers you'll be fine....

Cheers,

are these settings serously wrong? are there only 15
irq's for these item's to use?
what can i do to fix this problem??

by the way, thanks.

Hello Dan, ooooh, you have got some activity going on there haven't you?

Yes it does only have 16 irq's to do everything with, So, you need to
free some up really, that will make things a little bit better.

If you don't have any USB devices on your system then switch it off in
the bios, and disable it in device manager.

Also switch off any com ports that you aren't using as well.

AND this one really should have been done first, Switch off the onboard
sound as well, if you are not using it.

All of the 'sci irq used by acpi bus' references are supposed to be
there as well.

Some things should shuffle about once these are freed up, but only do it
to the devices mentioned that you aren't using.

Re: [AN1x-list] tweaking knobs in AN1x edit crashes my pc!! why God????? why???

2001-04-25 by Bruce Wahler

E-D,

Your system is crowded, but not unbelievably so. here's what I see:

>SETTING......HARDWARE USING THE SETTING..............
>00 system timer
>01 standard 101/102 key or microsoft natural keyboard
>02 programmable interrupt controler

These are all normal PC requirements, and couldn't be changed by the user,
anyway.

>03 communications port (com2)
>04 communications port (com1)

These are the standard locations for your serial ports. As Reggie said, if
you don't actually have serial devices connected (and few people do
anymore) consider disabling the ports. Depending on how your BIOS works,
you may be able to do this through BIOS setup alone, or you may have to
also disable them in Windows' Device Manager.

As an alternative, if you need both of these ports, but never at the same
time, you could manually configure them to one of the de-facto "sharing"
configurations in the MS-DOS world (provided that your BIOS supports this):

{3F8/IRQ4 + 3E8/IRQ4} or {2F8/IRQ3 + 2E8/IRQ3}

This will allow each of the serial devices to work in Windows, but only by
itself. As an example, I used to use this method to connect my PDA and an
EPROM programmer -- both serial devices -- to my PC, since I didn't have an
overpowering need to update my schedule while waiting for a ROM to program.

>05 acpi irq holder for pci irq steering
>05 via teck pci to usb universal host controller

This is really two ways of describing the same interrupt use; i.e., the USB
host is on IRQ5, and ACPI recognizes it. If you have no USB devices, you
can consider disabling it, but I would consider this as the lowest priority
of Reggie's three suggestions, IMHO. USB peripherals are becoming very
common, a single USB host can connect several peripherals, and USB hosts
share interrupts nicely when not in use.

>06 standard floppy disc controller
>07 epson printer port (lpt1)
>08 system cmos/realtime clock

More normal PC interrupt use, that can't be changed by the user. (OK,
technically, the printer IRQ can be moved, but I've never received anything
but grief when doing so.)

>09 acpi irq holder for pci irq steering
>09 via pci audio controller(wdm)
>09 sci irq used by acpi bus

This boils down to two uses: The internal audio controller (through ACPI)
and ACPI's SCI IRQ. This sharing is fine, though, as the SCI interface is
used very sporadically after boot. The bigger concern is, do you really
need the two sound cards? If not, ACPI will give IRQ9 to someone else,
which may smooth things out a bit. I used to use two sound cards, a Turtle
Beach Monterey and an Ensoniq Soundscape, and while the increase sound
palette seemed good on paper, I never really used it to the fullest extent,
even though both cards were (in their day) high-end wavetable synths.

As with the serial ports, first try to disable the on-board sound system in
BIOS setup, and then check the Device Manager to make sure the device is
really disabled. (If Windows can see the hardware, even after disabling it
in BIOS, it often "does you a favor" and turns it back on!)

>10 d-link de2200isa pnp lan adapter

Leave this one alone for now. I'm going to assume that your network
connection is fine.

>11 acpi irq holder for pci irq steering
>11 acpi irq holder for pci irq steering
>11 yamaha sw1000xg sound system
>11 magnum/xpert 128/xpert99(english)

This could be a problem, if the video card is actually using the IRQ during
normal use. (Many video cards call for an IRQ, but only use it during
video-intense operations like CAD and games.) Eliminating a serial port or
the original audio system will free up an interrupt, which will allow
Windows to move one of these devices to the new space.

>12 microsofr ps12 port mouse
>13 numeric data processor
>14 via bus master pci ide controller
>14 primary ide controller (dual fifo)
>15 via bus master pci ide controller
>15 secondary ide controller (dual fifo)

All of these are PC standard uses, and should be left alone. Most of them
couldn't be changed, even if you wanted to.

I hope this explanation helps.

Regards,

-BW
