Ok, maybe it's my fault for naming my cat Sasha (after the DJ), but lately she has quite a fetish for my AN1x... For some reason every morning around 6am she decides to stroll across my synth and usually manages to screwup whatever sound I'm working on. Grr. Besides that annoyance I'm quite afraid she's going to jump on it wrong and send the whole stand crashing to the floor.. Anyone have any ideas for keeping Sasha away from my synth? ;) Shayne

How about sewing a heavy-duty keyboard cover for it? Line it with some sort of stiff plastic that is sewable. Or maybe keep your AN1x in an "off limits" room (with a latching door. Or maybe you need to listen more closely to that "screwed up patch"...maybe your cat know's what she's doing! ;-)) =============================== Timothy Steven Clarke Sound Artist/CEO, Score! Or let the filters oscillate just above the hearing limit, they don't like the high pitch noise... btw... did anyone ever try to read the eprom v1.04 version and put it online so we can program the eprom ourselves? I just bought a secondhand an1x with version 1.01.... I'm probably upgrade crazy... Anyone have any ideas for keeping > Sasha away from my synth? ;) Question 2: Do you shut the door to the "synth room"? That's all I had to do. We had a cat who loved the keyboard so much that he would lie on the top octave of the piano while my son practiced. We think he liked the sound, vibrations, AND the feeling of the keys on his stomach! Therefore: No cats allowed in synth room. Period.

My solution for u is: Buy an ASR10 by Ensoniq. As all we know Ensoniq ASR 10 have overheat troubles, so the cat will be over the ASR 10 instead the AN1x, because cats prefer warm metal surfaces instead cold plastic.

> Anyone have any ideas for keeping > Sasha away from my synth? ;) I can't top Elson's barking sampler and G. Bravetti's warm ASR10 (brilliant people on this list !!). But I can't help thinking a decoy synth is a good solution. Animals are used in therapy to calm people--- So I think having a pet around helps calm you down after fighting buggy software. With this in mind- banishing said beastie is not a good idea. So we need a DECOY SYNTH. It has to be attractive to the cat (to get it away from the AN1x). Find a crappy old organ or portable Casio and do these things to it.... 1. place it low near the ground so Kitty can easily jump on it. 2. dip an old towel or cloth in 9lives seafood juice and put it on top of the decoy synth. 3. (this part will do the trick) write the word "EXPENSIVE" on the decoy- or place a "KEEP OFF" sign near the decoy. Kitty should go right for it. If that doesn't work, the cat may just be smarter than we are- ....live with it. Todd S. Yeah, I have to say the barking sampler is the best solution I've heard yet, I'll have to give it a try.. Anyone have a yappy dog I can sample? :) I also like the idea of setting the synth to make a pitch higher than human hearing to annoy the cat.. I know the synth is capable of this cause I've done it before simply to annoy her.. :) > But I can't help thinking a decoy synth is a good solution. Hmm, this could work, too.. I've got a DJX sitting in the basement that could be good for this. If everything else fails, be on the lookout for a new bank of sounds uploaded to yahoo groups "Patches by Shayne's Cat". ;-) Oh, and to the ones who suggested closing of the "synth room", I can't do that, it's my bedroom (which is why her being on it a 6am is annoying - it wakes me up)... Come to think of it, waking up to dogs barking probably isn't much better, but maybe after she does it once or twice she'll leave it alone. Shayne

One of my cats jumped on the end of my CS1x and flipped it off of the stand a
few months ago. Luckily no damage was done to the synth.
Another time we had guests over for dinner and all of a sudden a CS1x arp
pattern started playing from the studio. Our guests asked what the music was
and we said it was our cat playing the synthesizer. They did not believe us, so
we had to interrupt dinner and go downstairs to show them. When we walked in
the cat was sleeping on the CS1x. I snapped a picture:

I tried for years to keep the cats off the synths, but in the end they won out!

Nice Studio!!! I'm totally envious. How long did it take to amass
all that juicy gear.
Not being sarcastic at all here, but do you find that you can make
use of it all? My biggest problem with new gear is finding the time
to go thru the learning curve.

In the past year I have done a major upgrade to the studio. It included getting
rid of more than 10 synths that I no longer used/wanted and adding the Virus b,
Microwave II, Micro Q and Micro Modular. Lots of micros! :-) I sold/traded
off a bunch of the older synths (SH-101, Juno 60, MKS-70, MKS-50 (hoover patch
maker), K4R, K5000R, Emu Orbit.... still have some of the otheres lying about
but not used) to finance the new ones. I just added a Korg ER-1 to spice up the
drums a bit, they are so cheap now.....
I'm still facing the learning curve on many of the new ones, but I hope to keep
with the current setup for a long time, this should let me learn them inside
and out. I tend to learn the synths as I need to. I don't set out to learn it
top to bottom, I just figure the features out as need arises. Eventually I go
back and re-read the manual to figure out anything I might have missed while
exploring.
Hopefully no new synths come out any time soon that I can't live without!! :-)

I love the EX5R.... It still amazes me after owning it for a few years.
The master controller is an Alesis Quadrasynth Plus. My wife gave it and the
Mackie mixer to me for Christmas in 1995 (I think). It was a huge addition to
the Korg 03R/W and Roland D-5 that I already had. I don't use the Quadrasynth
for sounds anymore, just as a controller.

Why did you get rid of the K5000R, if I may ask? I tried a K5000S once and decided it was too expensive for what it did, but maybe you could elaborate on it. - Peter

It's funny that many of the presets are identical to those on the AN1x, or almost identical. But they have a different feel to them (better keyboard) and a rather better effects system. Still, the AN1x is a beautiful instrument in its own right, and beats the EX5 hands-down in analogue polyphony. - Peter

It's all in good fun :-) I'm only surpirsed no one suggestion an electrostatic discharge to scare the cats off ;-) Besides, our membership just keeps growing and we've had a steady influx of new talent contributing to the list. Greetings to all the new list members! regards, Jon

I guess I have the best of both worlds, then: an EX5S. :)
Seriously, the EX5 is a wonderful controller. It's funny that many of the
presets are identical to those on the AN1x, or almost identical. But they
have a different feel to them (better keyboard) and a rather better effects

Still, the AN1x is a beautiful instrument in its own right, and beats the
