Keyboard overflow

Keyboard overflow

2001-03-15 by Bruce Wahler

All,

I've just discovered that one of the two patches that I uploaded yesterday,
"Wacked" has a strange property: It seems to store up notes, if it can't
handle them all! Try this test -- load that patch and run your hands up
and down the keyboard in a two-handed gliss very quickly, then remove your
hands; the keyboard keeps playing some of the notes that you added, about
1/2-1 second after you played them. It's the only patch that I can find
that exhibits this strange behavior, and I've compared its settings with
other patches, and turned features on and off, but the "feature" stays.

Anybody have an idea what's going on?

Regards,

-BW

Envelope or effect decay times, no doubt.

No, that's not it. The reverb and echo are set to soft settings, and the
VCA decay is about 10, and here's the kicker: I cannot get it to happen
with normal, single-hand riffs. It requires either two hands working
frantically, or palm smears, a la Hammond organ.

Here's a simple test that works every time: If I put my right hand on
Middle C and gliss up to high C and back down again -- no overflow. If I
put the left hand on the F below Middle C and gliss both hands up to the
top and back again, when I take my hands off (at around the same notes as
where I started), the keyboard is actually only playing High-F/high-C at
that moment, and about a half second later, it glisses down to the end
notes -- even though I'm no longer touching the keys!

Congratulations! You've now joined the ranks of guitar synthesists by
playing faster than the unit can track the notes.

(...maybe...Idunno...weird...uh, which .zip file of patchs is "Wacked" in?)

or -- could it be the free envelope generator
or -- are you pressing the hold pedal (this sounds like troubleshooting
advice in the back of anything electronic... "be sure the unit is plugged
in", "be sure the volume knob is turned clockwise", "using 2 hands, check if
your butt is still connected)

Yo, and I've got a bone to pick with someone who said that the LEDs blinked
when the envelope generator is playing. Try watching them when you are
editing a patch name - as you scroll through the alphabet, the LEDs flash on
certain characters. What's that all about, special signals from Yamaha?

Whacked is in the 'drawbars' folder as part of GuitSync.zip.

>or -- could it be the free envelope generator

Nope, as far as I can tell, the free EG isn't being used.

>or -- are you pressing the hold pedal

No.

Hey Ed
I think you've got a Micro alien living in your AN1X.

Bruce:

It worked for me as described. I guess I have two observations:

- This synth has an analog synth personality (what with behaving
strangely on cold days and doing inexplicable delayed notes)

- Your patches were very cool.

Cheers,

Jerry

Or a ghost...

A ghost played my an1x when I was about to record a midi track on cakewalk.

It played exactly the same notes that I had been playing just few seconds
ago.
But there was a new kind of groove...
