Ribbon Controller

Ribbon Controller

2001-03-12 by Jerry

Dear AN1xers:

I don't seem to be able to find the answer to this question in the
manual, or in archives to this forum.

My question is:

In the ribbon controllers X dimension (left-right) how do I control
whether it will spring back to center, spring back to left, or hold
the last value?

All I can get it to do, is hold the last value. I thought I ran
across some factory patches (Tarkus, etc.) that swung back to center
upon release, however. Is just that some mod destinations are "hold"
and some are "continuous"?

Anyone know?

Cheers,

Jerry

Hi Jerry

See the note on page 75...only pitch up/down swing back to centre when the
ribbon is released. All other parameters stay fixed.

....in case you are wondering...yes I did memorise the entire manual whilst
writing An1xEdit ;-)

Ok, Gary and Jerry you have brought up one of the most confusing paramters
of the AN1x, and, IMHO, the manual lies.

To make the ribbon stay at the last place touched (according to the manual)
all you have to do is "not assign it to pitch bend". This is wrong. I've
assigned the ribbon to other parameters and it seems to always return to the
default when I release my finger.

Does anyone have better understanding of this parameter?

I remember there was something linked to "direct" depth ... I am not near
powered up An1x now , but it's something like if the "depth" of the ribbon
controller assignement is set to direct then the changes stay at the place
where you left the finger , otherwise (selecting "30" for ex.) - it returns ..
But I am not sure.

Ribbon Controller

2005-08-29 by daniel_8887

Hi AN1x Group!

Is there a possibility to disable this f....ng Ribbon Controller on
the left side?
I play for a while and then the sound gets like interrupted (short,
without release) till I press some times the Ribbon (I heard that I
have to press on the right side-above) and then I can play for a
while till it comes again. And again, and again....

I thought this machine is made for live performance? Pressing always
the Ribbon like a mad (making brzz, brzzz) to get the sound back????
How would this look like?
This is an analog synth, where I am never a slave of the sound.
Playing digital is always being a slave of the sound (played an E4
for a long time). Digital are boring and straightforward.
I bought this analog synth to have a grip on the sound. And now
this :-(
It looks like that some, or one technician made this brzzz, brzzz
feature intentionally. This is destroying the whole system.

Thanks in advance for suggestions to stop this unnecessary feature.

Best Regards,

Daniel Mandic

P.S. Sounds better than ANY digital synth.

It sounds more like you have some loose connection causing the ribbon
to always interfere with your whole setup. Check out the the yahoo
webpage of this group for some guides about screwing through your an1x.

Pure bashing on some technicality... It really sounds like you have a
faulty ribben, because mine doesn't have glitches at all (i'm actually
having trouble assigning it to my patches, but i'm not that far
through the manual yet :P )

> This is an analog synth, where I am never a slave of the sound.

It's actually a digital synth....... Virtual Analog. Some nasty DSP's
and other things pretending it to be a real analog synth. Doing an
amazing job at that. (I.e., all analog circuits are emulated through
dsp's and other processors)

True that!

Hope to have helped. Haven't unscrewed my AN1x yet, but on the group
pages someone did. He had some loose knobs and faulty ribbon
controller... but some new screws and plugging the ribbon ribbons back
in helped solve those problems.

Really, it just sounds like a technical malfunction. Because the ribbon
controller is just like the pitchbender, modwheel or one of the turn
knobs. It's there to do some mindbending sound tweaking, not to disrupt
the usage of the board (at least not intentionally).

Cheers!

You mean there are no quartz-oscillators? Why is the machine called
AN? I thought it is less virtual then the virtuals today.
If all goes with DSP´s, the only analog would be the knobs and wheels
I turn around ;-)
Or did you mean analog handling with digital sound (Virtual analog).

Yeah, I will cut off the circuit. :-)

Well, that is my understanding of the machine. It's just a bunch of
digital circuitry, hooked up in such a way that it has a rather true
analog feel to it. I'm no real expert :) Only experimenting with the
thing as I try to learn it.

Virtual analog yes. All sounds are created digitally. But it is a real
synth as anolog synths go. It has the usual VCO/VCF/VCO line. So it's
not sample based at all. It is just like those software synths (vst/au).
All the filters, oscillators and opamp stuff is 'emulated'. Only
difference is that with the AN1x the emulation is done with integrated
circuits instead of software. Ah well, maybe I'm just totally wrong and
someone here will kick me and tell me how it really is. (It's not the
first time for me to find out I've had my ideas completely wrong)

It's an algorithm. A clever algorithm, that's why it sounds so good.

Daniel,

I really have no desire to put you down. First allow me to state that I have no
problem with interpreting weak English skills, and that was not my main reason
for what I said. My best friend makes mistakes with English and I am able to
understand her.

THIS is the reason for calling it a rant:

> I thought this machine is made for live performance? Pressing always
> the Ribbon like a mad (making brzz, brzzz) to get the sound back????
> How would this look like?

What in the name of flapping birds on flatus are you trying to say?

Let me do a little of my limited German as an example:

Die Taste I Ordnung mit Schere (Schnitzel, Schnitzel, Schnäpper) lenkt uns von
den Tönen ab, die digital gebildet werden, damit analoge Töne mit einer
getrübten Krone anordnen. Mein Beutel denkt Sie ein Schuh, der im Socke Raum
durchlöchert wird.

Are you a stoner? Doper? Smoke the silly weed kind of person? Got a pot on
your head looking around at others as stupid?

Again - wtf are you trying to say? If you don't know how to program the ribbon
controller, RTFM. Plain and simple. The ribbon is an excellent controller and
the manual explains how to set it up in the Matrix section very well. Its use
can vary from patch to patch in how it effects the sound.

(The English for the above is:
The button I trim with scissors (snip, snip, snap) distracts us from sounds made
digitally so that analog sounds rule with a tarnished crown. My bag thinks you
a shoe holed in the sock space.)

THAT'S why I said your rant was weird, Daniel. It JUST DOESN'T MAKE SENSE IN
ANY LANGUAGE.

Exactly that, what is written. You mean I should use a perfect english? I don´t like...
I write perfect when I want....

I was more interested in a reply, to fix the ribbon.
But you can know, I did´nt find a solution. I have just disabled the Ribbon.

Maybe you can understand that I cannot use it anymore. You replies did not help me very much.
Maybe you can also understand that it is logically to look in TFM. I was more interested to fix this erroneous feature! With a new Ribbon? Or a service? etc etc..

You are a cocky ape.
Just write your superenglish, and let me write english as I do.

No, I have disabled it. On the other hand, I have no time to use the Ribbon controller at all.
So it make no difference if it is ON or OFF.

I cannot program. Sorry. But at least I know to RTFM.

RE: [AN1x] Ribbon Controller

2005-09-03 by Ed Edwards

OK, now that we're done with the ridiculous part of this conversation... :-)

The ribbon controller is VERY COOL. What's this talk of buzz, buzz, whatever?
Look, one of the most common uses for it is to have it open the filter as you
move toward the right, and close it moving toward the left. Pressure is mapped
in the control matrix to resonance very often. (I'm trying very hard to
remember a factory patch that uses it this way... I think I'm only using about
15 of the factory patches and the rest are my own creations or goodies I've
picked up from the group.) OK, I remember one... Bronze (don't know the number,
my AN1x is at another location). I'm sure with this typical analog French Horn
emulation they mapped the filter to the X-Y axis. Try it out. It can make a
very useful swelling in the tone.

I suggest you enable it (the ribbon) again, and try it with a few factory
patches and then report to the list what happens with each. If you get
crackling or bad stuff that isn't supposed to happen, then maybe the hardware is
defective. If so, you can live without it, although it is VERY COOL.

Hope this helps.

RE: [AN1x] Ribbon Controller

> I think not. The two wheels will suffice.

Um, 2 wheels, 8 knobs, aftertouch, 2 variable pedals and a hold pedal.

Do I use all of the above? No. I only use one knob live which I've mapped to
tempo. Anything else I can play with two hands and use aftertouch or the
pedals, with one hand the ribbon is nice.

You need (as a new user) to grab new sounds from the Yahoo server. I promise
you will find a few that will blow your head off. This is an excellent synth
and this is an excellent list who support it very well.

Pest Wishes,

Ed Edwards

RE: Ribbon Controller

2005-09-03 by Daniel Araujo

I have to adapt this "Seinfeld" quote into this conversation:

I am using the ribbon. He is using the ribbon. We are all using the
ribbon! So why aren't you going to use the ribbon?

What I find very cool about the ribbon controller is that I can switch
it from 0 to 127 very quickly (more than knobs) and steadily (better
than aftertouch). I use it to control filter and sync to emulate the
distorted / wah'ed intro to U2's "Elevation", which demands a lot of
rhytmic precision since all other instruments are joining in after me. I
can't think of any other built-in controller that would give me better
results.

The ribbon controller is VERY COOL. What's this talk of buzz, buzz, whatever?
