OS .104 upgrade

OS .104 upgrade

2001-03-08 by Robert Doolittle

I just spoke with Yamaha and they will NOT send you a free upgrade
for the OS if you purchased the unit used.

I spoke with a manager to let them know that others reported that
they had received the update on used units per the e-mails in this
group (unless I misunderstood what I had read).

They stated that it was policy that they will not send the update on
used gear even though they had done so in the past. When I mentioned
that I could have lied and stated that I bought it from a music
retailer, he agreed that I could have lied and got the part.

I mentioned that I would be updating the 450 users on this Yahoo
group and he stated that was fine. If I wanted to let everyone know,
that was fine with him.

Just wanted you to know if you buy it used and tell them the truth
(which is always the best policy in my mind) it will cost you $35 for
the upgrade.

Seems for $35 they could have kept a happy customer, but they choose
to live by policy.

Just my first experience with Yamaha. Much different then my
experience with Korg or Alesis. Alesis sent the e-prom at NO charge
even as a used unit. When there is a bug, even Microsoft provides
free upgrades.

I hope you did not get that impression from my post on this topic. If
so, please accept my apologies. I'm the original owner of my unit and
always attempt to point out what was service was provided at what
cost or under warranty as I know there are many owners of 2nd hand
AN1x synths who will have to ask the tough question - 'how much will
it cost?'

Good of you to set the record clear on Yamaha's policy. Before I
repost my original 'OS 1.04' post to the web I'll amend it with this
information so no one else will be surprised.

It does seem like a "bass ackwards" policy.

That's really too bad - and unless I'm mistaken you are not alone in
and there have been similar complaints to the list regarding Yamaha
tech support. In contrast, all of my experiences with Yamaha Customer
Assistance, in regards to the AN1x, have been very positive. Same
goes for the tech support on my Yamha CDRW. *sigh*

I'm got the impression that they were updating their bugs for free
from a few e-mails I have read over this post. Again, maybe I was
reading into the e-mail what I wanted to see. :-)

ALesis shipped the eprom upgrade on my QS6 even though I wasn't the
original user and it even had added functionality to use the sounds
mapped for the QS7 and QS8.

Very nice folks.

Just a warning that Yamaha belives in policy. It goes back to the
old saying, "Make one customer happy and they will tell two people,
make one upset, they will tell the world."

Hello World.

:-)

Hey I wasn't aware of an OS upgrade. I'm the original owner on mine, is
there a URL for downloadintg? Will they respond to an Email request for it?

TIA

It's fastest to call Yamaha. Since you are the original owner and
have purchased it within the last 3 years, you should get it for free.

Enjoy

Re: OS .104 upgrade

I emailed them via their Customer Service links at Yamaha.com. Asked
them if it was available and how would I get the EPROM. I got an email
response telling me it was on its way - 8 days later and it was on my
door step.

Do a search on OS 1.04 against the archive and see my original post
plus those in this current thread.
