OT: Waldorf MicroQ vs. AN1x

OT: Waldorf MicroQ vs. AN1x

2001-03-05 by tspeer

OK I fooled you
- I'm NOT starting a Waldorf MicroQ vs. AN1x thread-
But I do want to make a quick point (with supporting comments).

My Point is this...

Buy a Waldorf Micro Q because...

1. It compliments the AN1x very well.
2. It is affordable ($750)- and has about 25voices (dependent on processing)

I bought one and compared it to my An1x-

I must say the An1x still sounds Soooo Goood- the Micro Q just doesn't even
cover the same sonic ground (so Don't think you can trade in the AN1x for a
MicroQ).

The good news about this combination is this.....

The MicroQ offers 3 things to add to your arsenal..

1. Process external instruments (even the AN1x) thru the MicroQ filters (or
use the MicroQ Vocoder).

2. A good alternative Physical Analog Modeling engine that sounds
different(than the AN1x).

3. This is the part I really Love- I received an email from a rep. at
Waldorf in Germany and he told me the Waldorf MicroQ has 2 WAVETABLES that
contain "the Best of" the wavetables in the Waldorf Microwave XT !
(each Wavetable has 128 waves each).

I'm sorry to sound like a salesman- I just wanted to share this thinking it
might be of some interest to fellow AN1xers.

Yup me too! I also have the Novation Nova, Virus b and Waldorf MWII (rack
version of XT). They all play very nicely together and sound unique! :-)

That is a lot of virtual analog synthesis power. I am glad to run
across someone who has most of it, and can make some (unbiased)
comparisons. If you had to lose them all except the AN1x and one
other, which would it be? Or to put it differently, which complements
the AN1x best? (Both tonally and in terms of features.)

Thx,

Jerry

Hi Jerry,

This is a tough one because each person has their own preferences in sound an
functionality.... If I could only have an An1x and another synth I would
probably buy a Yamaha EX5R. It would give me the greatest sound potential.

If I had other sources for non-VA sounds and I could have the AN1x and one
other VA, at this point I would probably get the Virus b. Two weeks ago I would
have said the Novation Nova because it is easy to use and has great dedicated
effects for each multi-part. I just got the Virus b and found it to be a little
more difficult to use in some aspects, but it has alot to offer. They are hard
to get though. I waited about 2.5 months to get mine.

The Micro Q is the most difficult to work with, but has very rewarding sounds.
My biggest complaint is the effects implementation. In multi-mode only one part
can keep it's full effects (effect #1 and #2) since effect #2 gets shared
between all multi-parts. Also, only four unique occurrences of effect #1 can
exist in multi-mode (parts 1 - 4) the rest of the multi parts can be assigned
to use the effect of part 1 -4, but the send levels cannot be adjusted.

So, there you have it.... All of them are great. Eventually you will probably
want to own them all. :-)

May I vouch for the EX5 instead of the EX5R? I've had the module, and now
have the (silver) keyboard.

Each synthesiser, at least the ones with a keyboard, has it's own, personal
sound that signifies that synthesiser. For the EX5, it really shines at
strings and pads. It has many wonderful sounds, but I feel that those are
the signifying sounds.

Which raises an interesting question: what is that signifying sound for the
AN1x? I would imagine one of those sharp leads, which you can play
lighting-fast (well, maybe you, not me :) ).

The Virus is great. It has a very high "fun to play with" value. Personally,
I would go for the Supernova II, though. I tried them both, and don't really
prefer the one of the other regarding sound, but the Novation feels easier
to use, and looks far better (although beauty is in the eye of the
beholder).

I think I'm going to buy a Peugeot 206 CC first. Well, I would love to. I'll
have to see if I can afford it.

Are you serious about buying a french car???

I'm about to buy either a nova or virus (maybe the rack version) to upgrade
my setup too...I find using only one VA in my setup (besides my cs2x and
sampler) is just not enough....I allways have to resort to sampled version
of many of my sounds (which in some cases makes em sound better, rougher)
And I must say the nova all look very tasty indeed and are pretty cheap too
(anybody know what european dealer delivers virusses, musiciansgear doesnt')

Have you seen the tasty news on the new Nova OS that will be released in a few
weeks? It is getting most of the SNII features! This info came from
http://www.dancetech.com:

A DANCETECH EXCLUSIVE !!!!!!!

OS 4 -

Same filter types as in SNV Series II's !!!!!
Double Saw !!!!
Unison !!!!
Pan with Effects !!!
Special Filter Width !!!
AND...... THE SPECIAL BUTTONS WILL WORK !!!!!

Additional features include :

Improved Arp pattern editing (all on one page now)
Optional "pickup" Knob mode
Global Program Change Tx option Global Controllers Tx option
Will now be able to download most SNII series sysex dumps! (including patch
dumps)

So, the Nova is looking like a great buy! I wonder if the used prices will go
up though.

Have you seen the 206 CC? It's a convertible and coup in one car, which
ideal for here (rainy winters of around 15 C, spring and autumn of around
25 C, summer of up to 40 C). And it looks beautiful.

Why is no-one interested in what the signifying sound for the AN1x is? :)

I really wanted to get a nice black 206gti - thought they looked really cool
but when I took my car to the garage there was a 206gti in the back. The
mechanic told me it hadn;t done 8000 miles and the engine had totally blown
up and the mechanic said the engine in the car was shit. (which is why it
blew up).

This put me off quite a lot. Then I saw on the ralley championships - all
the 206's had retired from the race cos they were all shagged.

But i still think it looks cool as fuck.

It's hard for me because I have the EX5R also. Did you hear my track
"Tradewinds"? I really liked the frigid sounds the AN1x created in the first
2:20. A single AN1x patch and some tweaking created these sounds. I was
surprised in a pleasing way when I worked with the AN1x on this project.
