Kenton Plugstation & PLG cards

2000-12-21 by jondl@jdlx-musique.com

Has anybody yet seen the post at YamahaSynth.com
http://www.yamahasynth.com/news/index.htm regarding the Kenton
Plugstation http://www.kenton.co.uk/productspecs/plugstation.html
Looks like this old rumor proved to be true! Check out some of the
features:

Features and Specifications
Breakout box for up to four Yamaha PLG cards
Can be used in four different configurations
Editing from front panel and PC/Mac
Can be used as a standalone unit
Optional card with eight audio outs
Can be used with any device that supports plugcards (ie S80 synth)
Operating system flash upgradeable via MIDI
Optional DS2416 interface card allows you to route the SW1000 digital
stereo feed and six auxiliary outputs to the optional audio card
Plugcards' outputs can be routed back to the SW1000 card for output
or directed to the optional audio out card
1U rack unit
MIDI In, Out & Thru

Gary, is an update to AN1xEdit scheduled to accomodate this product
or are you not involved with this?

regards,
JOn

Does it allow you to play more than one card at a time?

Hi Jon,
> Gary, is an update to AN1xEdit scheduled to accomodate this product

I worked with Kenton and Yamaha UK to design Plugstation :-)
It should be on show at NAMM at the end of next month.

I don't think An1xEdit will need to be updated to support the box.....it
should work as is!

However I may write some software for Plugstation itself (if I have
time).....and possibly integrate support for the box in XGedit.

Yes...you can play all four PLG cards simultaneously...either from the host
device (SW1K, S80 etc) or from the external box mounted MIDI ports....or
from a combination of both. You can also route their outputs to separate
audio outs (if you have the Audio board option fitted) or back to the host
device as a mixed down stereo signal.

Also each card can have a separate port allocation and MIDI channel.
Furthermore each card can also have a different sysex ID. So you could have
four PLG150AN cards in there and you could edit them separately!!! This
would give you a quad timbral AN device with a polyphony of 20 notes!!!!

Basically its very cool...and very affordable :-)

Wow , that sounds very interesting ..
Though I bought ViRUS b several months ago , I am still using AN-1x more 'cause
I think I love its sound more .. it's very smooth and warm it seems to me
compared to raw and sharp sound of ViRUS ..
I'd definitly love to have more AN-1x power ..
How much will the box be and how much is AN1x card now ?
Plus - what features does Card lack compared to real AN-1x ? I heard Free EG
(big pity) , what about FX and modul. matrix ?

Why not try a Supernova then, except for the fact that it's
rather pricy?

I think you've already answered that - a SuperNova is rather pricey!

Gary, congrats on the Plugstation. Hope it proves to be a success for
you and Kenton...and Yamaha too.

I'm pleasantly surprized they - Yamaha - bought into the concept. Did
they subsidize the r&d? Did Kenton and you have to reverse engineer
the PLG design or is the spec something Yamaha openly licenses? The
CS6x, S30 and S80 appear to fall under the category of 'commercial
success' so can we expect Yamaha to perpetuate further PLG boards and
PLG capable hosts?

AN1x-PLG has free EG and Matrix. It only has Amp sim effect because the
host device is expected to have native effects that can be applied to
the PLG card. It doesn't have scene 2.

I am not sure whether the price is finalised (it will of course depends on
who distributes it and where). However the price I have heard is around
200Uk pounds for the basic unit (i.e. without the multiple output Audio
mixing board).

The PLG150AN is around 150UK pounds.

Plus - what features does Card lack compared to real AN-1x ? I heard Free EG

The PLG card is single scene (5 note poly) and does not provide the An1x
effect units (apart from AMP Sim....the host device is supposed to provide
effects). It does however have the FreeEG, Step Seq/Arp and Matrix features.
Plus you can still do morphing (albeit between the active scene and a
pre-stored voice). As an added extra the PLG card also provides some cross
modulation parameters and oscillator wave forms that were not present on the
original AN1x!

As such the AN1x and PLG150AN card are NOT directly sysex compatible.
However if you use An1xEdit, then it will take care of converting voice
patches between the two devices for you ;-)

Yes...the current range of available PLG cards (VH, DX, VL, AN, PF) are only

Yep...but as I said...its a case of finding the time. Really I hadn't
planned to update XGedit further until I could move it over to the new MIDI
Plugin format I am working on. However I may try to find time to incorporate
Plug station support....if only because it will be so damn useful :-)

Yes, but the Nova is not too bad. It has the same sound engine of the
Supernova, but is only 6-part 12 voice instead of the Supernova's 8-parts. All
six parts have dedicated effects in multi-mode. It also has a vocoder,
programmable arp and a great interface.

They can be bought used for around $800 ($1000 new) which I would guess would
be cheaper than buying the Plugstation and 4 PLG cards.... I really love my
Nova with it's great sound and hands-on interface and recommend them highly.

Don't get me wrong: I think the SuperNova sounds wonderful and the
layout (user interface) is well thought out too! I wish I could spend
more hands on time with one. Your point regarding the Nova should be
well taken as an alternative to "stock piling" (I use the term VERY
loosely) PLG150-AN cards. My *personal* preference has always been
for the Nord Lead 2 but that's another matter altogether and I'm
already on record as being a fan of the Nord user interface :-)

Still, back to the Plugstation (what's in a name, anyway? ;-) you
have to admire the fact that somebody is actually bringing a viable,
aftermarket accessory like the Plugstation to fruition. It's been
*years* since anything like this was made and I hope the trend
continues! Remember those old DX7 hacks from Grey Matter Response, or
that DW8000 mod from Angel somethingorother in Germany( and didn't
they do one for the D50 too?) What about the "Frontal Lobe" mod for
the Korg M1?! I think it's great that they've done this and I wish
them all due success.

regards,
Jon

That Nord interface is very immediate indeed! I have watched them also over the
past couple years.

Yes, I think it's a very cool thing. Did I understand correctly that it does
not need a host synth (Yamaha CS6x or S20)? But if that's the case then I guess
you would have no effects unless you bought an external processor...
